JOTTINGS FROM WANGANUI.
SOME SUFFOCATING AVEATHER, (By Tekeraph.-Special Corresronaent.l Wanganui, April 22. Following the example set at the statutory meeting of tho Wangamii East ratepayers, those of the main borough have now resolved in terms of approval concerning the raising of a loan of .£11,500 for the construction of a new traffic bridge. On the same evening as the town meeting, the anti-bridge Eection called a meeting at Wanganui East which was crowded. Contrary to their expectations, however, their arguments failed to convince the meeting, and an amendment in favour of the council's proposals was carried by an overwhelming majority, only four voting against it. A poll in connection with this matter will be taken on Wednesday next, and, on present appearances, the proposals should be carried easily. A very largely-attended meeting of Home Rule sympathisers was held last night, at which preliminary arrangements were made for the reception and entertainment of the Irish delegates'who visit AVanganui on or about May 20. Stock prices appear to be recovering from the setback caused by the recent drought. H is reported in tho local press that a large line of store cows was sold privately yesterday at £o 10s. per head. Wangiuiiii is at present experiencing a heat wave, which is aggravated by a northerly wind. The weather is suffocatingly hot, and extremely trying.
