{Before Mr. W. G. Eiddell, S.M.) Business was brief at the Magistrate's Court on Saturday, and was quickly . transacted. A young man, named 'William Oughton, who stated that ho was a labourer belonging to Greytown, appeared on remand charged with assaulting Charles Dunst.-.n on April IS. The latter, who is partially crippled and G3 years of nge, appeared in Court with his head bandaged, and his face badly bruised. Accused stated that he was under the influence of liquor and remembered nothing about the occurrence, but was willing to pay all expenses. He was fined M and ordered to pay 10s. Cd. medical feeand witnesses' expenses,'l2s. Default was fixed at one month's imprisonment. An application for time to find the money was refused. . . ■ James M'Swigan appeared-on remand for sentence on a charge of stealing a bicycle, valued at ,£lO, the property of Johii C. Sinclair. Mr. P. W. Jackson stated that ( hc had just received a telegram from Mr. Cassidy, of Christchurch, instructing him to ask for a remand until Monday, as accused's mother was coming to Wellington. The remand was granted. Gerald Coveney pleaded guilty to a charge- of stealing two pairs of boots, valued at 135., the property of Fanny Whittaker, and to a further charge of stealing a pair of trousers, valued at Ids., the property of Thomas Costello. A fine of 20s. was imposed on each charge, the default being fixed at 11 days' imprisonment. John Reid was remanded to appear at Christehurch on Tuesday next on a charge of failing to provide his wife with adequate maintenance. John Shannon denied having been drunk on Friday last, and also denied having procured liquor during the currency of a prohibition order. The evidence wa=. however, against him and, on the first charge, he was declared a habitual inebriate nnd sentenced to one month's imprisonment. For breach of the order, he was convicted and discharged.
