YACHTING.
POET NICHOLSON CLUB. On Saturday afternoon a general handicap race for first, second, and thirdclass yachts was hold under the auspices of the Port Nicholson Yacht Club. In conjunction with the above event a race was also held for second-class yachts. The result of the general handicap race was not what was expected by yachtsmen, the large handicaps in some cases accounting for this. A good, fresh "northerly" prevailed, which made a number of the slow yachts "shake things up." It was not anticipated that the third-class yacht Amni would win, but, after taking off the handicaps, it was found that she had done so, and by a fairly large margin. Fifteen yachts compoted in the race. They were:—Jfahina (scr.), Muritai (3min.), 'W-hito Heather (smin.), Windward (Ginin.), Lizzie (lOmin.), Taipare (lliuin.), Nancy Stair (13nrin.), Viking (lomin.), Nanoya (21min.), Ethei (25min.), liawene (29min.), Mahaki (33min.j, To Rhuna (37min.), Nikau (37min.), and Amai (4limin.). The finish of tho race was a good one, all .tho yachts coining up fairly close to each other. The result of the Vaco and the finishing times are as follow:—Amai, shr. ISmin. iSsec, 1; Te Khuna, shr. 23min. 35soc, 2; Nikau, shr. 37min. 35sec, 3; Bawene, shv. 2Srain. sSsuc.; Nanoya, shr. 24nii)i. 56sec.; Nancy Stair, shr. lfimin.; Taipare, shr. ISmin. 13sfc; Mahiiia, shr. lOmin; lOsec.; White Heather, shr. 17inin. Bsec.; Lizzie, Shr. 17min. -ISscc.; Jfuritai, Shr. 16miu. 25?0e.j Windward, shr. 20ruiu. 25sec. Viking, Mahaki, and Ethel did not finish. Tho second-class yacht race resulted in a tio between the yachts Nanoya and Nancy Stair, Taipare being second, and Lizzie third. The finishing times wen; (ho same as in the previous race, lml the handicaps wore as follow:— Lizztu (scr.), Taipare flmin.), _ Nancy Rlnir (3min.), Viking (Smiil.), Xnnoyn fllminj, and Ethel (lSmiii.). Viking and Ethel did not finish. To Aro Sailing Club. The Te Aro Sailing Club held its last race for tilt Winder Cup on Saturday afternoon. The wind was fresh, and the little boats carried their sail well. The cup was won by Lotus, owned and sailed by Mr. Fred Cooko. Valeta came second, aiul Nan third. The new high-speed launch was floated into the water off the Queen's Wharf on Saturday afternoon, and (owed to the Boat Harbour by the Euihi. Tho launch was built by Jter.srs. Gendel and Pierard, of Brooklyn, and is 20ft. long. She has a bow and stern similar to that of a man-o'-war, and is fitted up with a thrw-cylinder, 25-h.p. Ferro engine. j
