LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,I am offering myself for election lo the City Council of Wellington, and as I do not belong to any League, I have a free hand, and am not bound lo any party. • My intention is, if.elected, to see- that justice is done to all members of the community. I am a strong believer in employees getting a fair living wage. I have employed labour in this city for thirty-five years, and anyone who has been in my employ will bear me out in stating that I have always paid wages sufficient to enable the into Jive comfortably. At tho late conference between the City Council and the labourers in its employ, it was decided to refer the question of wages to the Arbitration Court, because an agreement could nqt be como to at the'conference. I think this matter should; have been settled amicably betweeri ; all • parties. Tho Corporation should arrive at some conclusion as to what a living'wage is, and then see''that this is the minimum paid to its employees. I contend that the best and most economical policy is to pay good wages so long as you get a good return in tho shapo of honest work. This is the essence of economy, but it does not entail a, reduction,of wages. The overcrowding of the tramcars is a thing that the new Council should see to immediately. A city like this can well afford to have extra cars and to run a five-minutes' servico in the busy times of the day, and now the winter is coming on and people to be crowded together in wet clothes, which is injurious to the public health, this should be seen to at once. If elected, the first thing I would do would be to use all my power to rectify this overcrowding of cars. I am not a politician, and I do not think that one- need bo a politician to qualify for the Council. On tho other hand, I am a man with sound business knowledge and experience, and these are the essential qualifications for Councillorship where so many large undertakings have to bo managed on business principles. Yours faithfully, JOSEPH MANDEL. TO'THE ELECTORS. LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,-! again offer my services to you as Councillor for the City. Should my past services meet with your approval, I hope you will record that approval at the polling booth. Having time at my disposal, and 50 years' practical knowledge of building in all branches, I think my experience will be of value as a member of the Harbour Board. I therefore place myself in your hands, with a pledge to do my very best for tho City and Board. Yours, etc., JAMES TREVOR. MESSRS. CAMERON, H'INTYRE, and M'KENZIE will address the electors of Brooklyn, from Benge's Corner, at 7.30 p.m. MONDAY, weather permitting. CITY COUNCIL' ELECTION, ' HEAR Tyy SCOTT BEDFORD THE QUEEN'S STATUE, TO-DAY . 12.30 p.m. Also, MONDAY, 24th APRIL, Same time. TO THE ELECTORS OF THE CITY OF WELLINGTON. LADIES AND GENTLEMENI beg again to offer my services as a Councillor. If elected it will be my aim to promote the best interests of the citizens as a whole. I represent no particular class, but consider that the needs of each section of the community should receive fair and broad-minded consideration. The important public utilities now being carried on should be kept as free as possible from the influence of party politics or class interest, and should bo mnnaged with the one object of rendering tho greatest possible- services to tho public, consistent with the maintenance of a sound finance. If elected I shall support a continuance of the progressive and nrudent policy that has been followed during the past fewyears. I think the following are matters that should bo effectively dealt with in the near future:— The extension of Constable Street Tramway. The acquirement of additional recreatioi- areas and definite schemes for the improvement of the Town Belt and Lyall Bay Reserve. Rearrangement of tho Zoo management and control. The establishment of a Milk Depot, as already approved by the Council. The establishment of a Municipal Market on ah experimental scale that will bo.capable of expansion as required. I am opposed to any projects that would tend to increase the rates. Yours faithfully, G. SHIRTCLIFFE. TO MIRAMAR ELECTORS. I AM standing for Election to a Seat on the Council. I am circularising the Electorate giving briefly my ideas on the chief needs of the Borough, and I trust that thev will assure your ESTEEMED VOTE AND ACTIVE INFLUENCE on my behalf on Polling Day.
