HUTT AND PETONE NEWS.

(From Our Special Correspondent.! ACCIDENT ON HUTT ROAD. Shortly after 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon Miss Sanderson, while cycling along tho Hutt Road, in tho vicinity of the railway crossing opposite tho Grand National Hotel, Petoue, was knocked over by a motor-cyclist. She sustained a somewhat severe cut over the eye, and it is thought that a small bone in her arm is broken. Her bicycle was totally wrecked. PETONE HIGH SCHOOL. The final meeting of the present committee of the Petono District High School Committeo was held last evening. Mr. Barlow complained that surfacewater from tho school ground was an annoyance to his tenants.—lt was re-' solved to notify the Education Hoard that they were responsible for the grading of the ground, and tho committeo Vroiild therefore look to them to rectify "this trouble. The annual report and balance-sheet to bo presented at the meeting of householders on Monday evening states that steady progress and careful administration of the finances had been features of tho year, and considerable improvements have been made to the school. The balance-sheet shows the total receipts to be £332 los. 7d.; expenditure, £319 7s. 9d.; credit balance. £13 7s. lOd. ... Tho headmaster in his report thanks members of the committee for past considerations. PRIZE-GIVING. Tho annual distribution of prizes In connection with the. Lower Hutt District High School was held yesterday afternoon. There was a largo gathering of parents and friends. Mr. T. M. Wilford,' in addressing tho scholars, stated that if they were only aware of it, school-days were the happiest in anybody's life. Mr. Wilson, chairman of the School Committee, also spoke. Mrs. Wilford presented tho prizes. LODGE CARD TOURNEY. The first of tho season's card tournaments in connection with tho united lodges of Lower Hutt was held this week. A shield has been presented by' tho Oddfellows'- Lodge, to be won twic'o in succession or threo times in all, in order to become the property of any lodgo.

PETONE COURT. The monthly sitting of tho Petono Magistrate's Court was held yesterday morning, Dr. M'Arthur, S.M.; presiding. Mr. Mothes, J.P., was also on tho Bench. The Borough Council proceeded against Clias. Symes for unlawfully (being an unlicensed plumber) altering a drain in Nelson Street. A penalty was not pressed for, and as a warning defendant was merely convicted, with costs amounting to 7s. Tho borough inspector (W. B. Gough) sued E. M'lntosh for the. registration fco for three dogs.—Dismissed. _ The maintenance case, Stowell v. Stowell, adjourned from last sitting, was again mentioned and adjourned. At a sitting of tho Juvcnilo Court, a lad, 14 years old, was charged with' throwing stones to tho danger of passers-by. Ho had a previous conviction against his name for wilful damago to a garden; Dr. M'Arthur warned the boy that if ho appeared before tho Court a third time he would havo to consider what; would bo done with him. This tinio ho would bo convicted and discharged. John Cotton sued- .George Cotton for tho sum of £'25, the balance of a loan of £100 made by plaintiff eighteen mouths ago. Judgment was entered for the amount claimed with costs. G. D. Cronin, coach-builder, of Petono, claimed from Matthew Sharp tho sum of £15, cost of construction of a milk-float.—Judgment reserved.

PETONE "WEST SCHOOL. Tho final meeting of the. present Petono West School Committee- was iield on Thursday evening. Members of tho committee present were: Messrs. Castlo (chairman), Snow, Burridge, Maynard, Evans, Parrant, Cotton, Mnrsden, and Davis. Mr. Maynard was thanked for various gifts of New Zealand woods and kauri gum, which ho had donated for tho school museum. Messrs. Burridge and Castle reported that negotiations with the .Education Board in regard to a miniature rifle range were now complete. j Messrs. Bedingfield and Burridge were appointed overseers of the work in connection with erecting a fence 12 feet away from the eastern boundary for tho purpose of constructing garden plots. The contractors are Jlessrs. Riddle and Firth, and tho cost is £19 18s. Some discussion took place over a letter received from the Education Institute, which requested that-the'fol-lowing motion be put before tho householders at tho election of the committer) next Monday night:—"That this meeting of householders considers that in the best interests of education a'Dominion scheme for promotion of teachers is urgently required, and that this resolution be forwarded to tho Minister for Education, Wellington." It was decided that the chairman put tho motion as required. The headmaster (Mr. Bedingfield) reported that the attendance for tho quarter ending March 31 was as follows: —Number on roll at end of last quarter, 403; pupils admitted, 61; withdrawn, 74; number on roll at end of present quarter, 393; average roll, 397; avcrago attendance, 372. During last month the scientific apparatus ordered some time ago had been received and the remainder would be forwarded as soon as possible. Tho report recommended that a grant of £2 should be made from the sports fund in order to furnish footballs for tho school team. This recommendation was agreed to. Concluding, the report thanked members for the courtesy and assistance extended to the headmaster during last year, and also made complimentary re-' fcrenco to the staff.
