JOTTINGS FROM WANGANUI.
(By TelceraDh.-Spccial Corresriondcnt.l Wanganui, April 11. Tlio death is announced of Mr. John Betts, one of the oldest settlers of the district. In the early days of this town he had very active connection with the shipping trade, and ran various timber vessels in and out of the port. Of late years he lived a retired life. He was 7S years of age. A meeting was hold last evening of those interested in rating on unimproved values, and it was decided to promote a petition for a poll to bo taken on the question. It was, however, decided to wait till Iho municipal elections were, over before taking any active steps. The last time. :\ poll was taken here on this subject, about seven years ago, it was decisively defeated. There has been a largo rush of applications for enrolment in the Defence Forces since the issue of the proclamation on April 1, and Lieutenant G. F. Hume, adjutant of this military district, reports _ having been kept exceedingly busy with the work of organisation since his arrival hero.
