FREIGHT CARS.

SYSTEM TO START SHORTLY. Tho. project, taken up some time ago by the Corporation Tramway Department, of running a freight car service to Kilbirnie is about to assume definite shape., A special car. designed for the work, has now been completed in the workshops of the Department. It is a vehicle rather longer than-a box-car, and resembles a railway luggage-van. Its side-walls are plain, and contain no glass, but there are tho ordinary glass shields in front of the motorman's stand at either end. The car is fitted on each side with large sliding doore. It is numbered 200, so as to leave room for an increase in passenger cars, of which there are at present 80. The service will be inaugurated obo>the end of the present month. It is proposed to run a morning and after noon trip from Lambton Station to Kilbirnie and Lyall Bay. If time permits arrangements may also be made to run a trip to Karori. Depots have been secured at various points in the city and in the suburbs which it is proposed to servo and arrangements have been made, for the delivery of goods. Very probably the freight car service may be grcatjy extended in tho near future. Extension depends upon the amount of business that proves to be available.
