PETONE AFFAIRS.
THE BOROUGH'S FINANCES. The fortnightly meeting of the Tctono Eoroudi Council was held last evening, there being present: The Mayor (Mr. J. \Y. M'Ewan), and Councillors R. J. Southgate, C. B. Brocklebank, J. Piper, 11. Jones, J. List. W. Trueman, E. W. Short, and 11. Harding. Inferring to the loans of .£2OOO, .£3OOO, jnd .£3OOO respectively, the secretary of the Government Insurance Department wroto (as the lenders), that the instalments of sinking funds—£24 19s. 5d., .£37 9s. Id., and ,£37 9s. Id. respectively— had not yet been received from the council, and requesting payment of the same to the Public Trustee. The amounts in question were passed for payment.
In a brief reference to tho borough's finances, detailed statements of which are to be brought down at tho next meetin" of the council, the Mayor said that, speaking generally, the council's expenditure had been kept fairly well within the estimates. The sanitation of the borough had cost the council .£1706 18s., whereas tho estimate was .£lßl7 15s. Bd.; the general work of the borough, under the heading of street repairs and maintenance, had cost .£2.149, slightly in excess of tho estimate of .£2275 Bs. 6d. "Tell us \yhat the surplus is," said an encouraging voice. c/jn't promise any surplus," replied the Mayor, who went on to say that he wished merely to indicate the geneial tenor of the year's operations. He would present a detailed statement later, and also take an opportunity of making a statement of policy. The present council had another meeting before jts term ended.
