HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Lower Sutt Borough Council was held last avening. Those present were: The Mayor' (Mr. E. P. Bunny), and Councillors Anson, Baldwin, Macaskill, Roots, Hayes, Kempthorne, and Hawthorn. A ratepayer asked. for timo in which to pay his rates, and to be relieved of the 10 per cent, liability.—lt was decided to deduct the ten per cent. The inspector (Mr. A. Mills) was granted a fortnight's leave of absence. Miss Jenness complained that she had three dresses 'Spoilt whilst crossing the footway on the Lower Ilutt Bridge, and enclosed an account for damages for .£1 6s. 6d.—The engineer explained that wirenetting had been the cause of the damage.—lt was resolved that the clerk sholnd make inquiries as to who was responsible for the maintenance of the bridge. The claim was not entertained. Replying to a question as to the necessity for the Hutt meat vendors to use the Wellington abattoirs, the 1 Department of Agriculture stated that butchers were not compelled to use the abattoir, and there was nothing to prevent them buying from the Meat Export Company, 6o long as the prescribed fees were paid to the controlling authority of the abattoir.

Dr. Perry reported that he had inspected a certain house in Victoria Street, and had found that it was in an unsanitary condition.—Received.

Mr. Feist agreed to the proposal to carry a drain through his property to the drain in Waterloo Road.

Mr. T. P. Allen called attention to tho state of the culvert and drain leading from the back of the Wainui Hill Road, and asked that it be cleared out.—To be carried out at once.

The Ilutt River Board intimated that they would join the council in a deputation to the Minister for Internal Affairs in regard to the application of the Petone Borough Council to have Gear Island vested in the Petone Borough.—lt was resolved that the council co-operate with the River Board.

Several ratepayers asked that a lamp be placed in Victoria Street, Alicetown.— Engineer to supply an estimate. A committee consisting of the Mayor, and Councillors Baldwin, and Hawthorn ■was set up to appoint a representative on the Assessment Court.

The Works and Finance Committee reported, in regard to the pumping station, that, after taking the evidence of experts, it recommended that the necessary shafting, belting, etc., be installed to make the machinery interchangeable; that provision be made for proper ventilation of the building; that the engineer be authorised to engage an assistant; that the clerk he instructed to communicate with Messrs. Merry weather, tho makers of the pumps, after which the council will consider what further steps may be necessary to improve the pumping plant; that, in nil cases where premises on tho western side of the river can be connected with the drainage system, steps be taken to compel compliance with the notices sent out; that the treasurer's recommendation that the council should pay into a sinking fund a sum of .E9SO be approved, and that the Public Trustee he appointed sinking fund commissioner under the loan.—Adopted. Tho engineer reported that twelve chains of sewer had been completed in Hautana Square; seventeen chains of wet had b«en laid and tested in Hume Street; work in connection with the Vienna Street drain had been suspended sending instructions; and certain altcra:ions had been made to the Alicetown jepbic tank to reduce a smell complained if. The cost of laying a gas main from Pretoria Street to Epuni Street and to Pilmuir Street would be ,E169.

The librarian's report showed a fallingnff of subscribers. Councillor Roots said that tho subscription was too high, and he would like to 4G6 the new council lower the fee.
