HASTINGS.
The Mayoral campaign was opened on Friday night by Mr.T. J. Thompson, exMayor of the borough, who delivered an address in the Municipal Chamber?. Other candidates in the field are Messrs. Garnctt and W. laue.
An important municipal undertaking was begun on Thursday afternoon, when the first sod of a reservoir, to be constructed on ; the Havelock Hills, was turned. ■ The reservoir is to store water from artesian wells in Hastings, and which will be forced up by pumping machinery, also located in Hastings. Water from the reservoir will then bo available for domestic purposjs and for fire-prevention in Havelock and Hastings. The excavation of the reservoir is now being proceeded with, and it is predicted lhat our townspeople will be able to obtain a high-pressure water supply from the borough mains within twelvo month?. Considerable interest is being taken in the election of a Hastings member of the Napier Harbour.Board. Three nominations are so far to hand, namely, Messrs. David Whyte,- Eustace Lane, and J. A. Millar (the present Mayor). The firstnamcil two are ardent supporters of Mr. George Kielson's inner harbour scheme, whilst Mr. Millar will be supported by the breakwater party. At this stage the chief interest lies in the question as to whether Mr. Whyte or Mr. Lane will receive the official support of tho Harbour League.
Some heavy showers and a day's drizzle in tho early part of tho week have laid the dust of tho streets, and improved tho condition of the country. Tho weather 'is now summer-like aga.iu.
