FROZEN MEAT TRADE SCHEME
MASTEItTON TO ASSIST.
The Jlasterton A. and P. Association, at its com-niittce meeting on Saturday afternoon, rfceiilcu to assist in raising funds to send a representative to London to watch producers' interests in the frozen meat trade.
The meeting, which was presided over by Mr. W. Perry, president of the association, was addressed by Messrs. W. Lysnar and J. Shellou, of Gishorne.
The president, stated that those who had heard Mr. Lysnar on Thursday would bo satisfied that tho movement he had inaugurated was one deserving of support. Mr. Lysnar stated that he was pleased that the freezing companies had now come out in tho open, and admitted that there was room for improvement. It was desired that those sheepfarmers who were shipping on their own account should be assured that they were receiving the fullest value for their output. It was also desired that those who did not care to take the risk of shipping under present circumstances should feel that tho conditions were so improved that they could ship on their own account, and get tho full value of their produce. This was the one object of the Produce Committee. It was proposed to send a representative Home independent, of the companies. The first proposal was to improve the dock facilities, ami to increase the storage (capacity. It was also desired to put in a system of rails, and to urge the doing away with the deduction of 21b. on each carcass of mutton. Pending legislation, it was proposed to send a representative Home by special effort. The Port of London Authority ■wanted an assurance that if the facilities were improved, advantage would be taken of them. This assurance had been given. A representative' was required to see that this work was carried out in the best possible way. A cable message had been , received from Lord Dsvonport .on Friday stating that . the improvements to the dock were being proceeded with. It was thought that a sum of ,£1750 would be sufficient to pay the expenses of a representative. Of this amount only .£3OO .was now required. • It was proposed that, when legislation 'was provided, tha amount subscribed would be refunded in whole'or in part. Mr. Lysnar, concluded with nn appeal for financial assistance, and suggested that a committee be set up to act with the Producers' Committee.
The president proposed that: a subcommittee be appointed, consisting of Messrs. D. J. Cameron> J. Strang, H. Morrison, G. Shaw, AV. - H. Cruickshank, H. H. Beethnm, and W. Perry, with power to add to their number.
The resolution was .seconded by Mr. A. G. Piliner, and carried. Mr. O. C. Cooper stated that it would bo necessary fpr the committee to take some littlo time to collect subscriptions. In proposing a vote of thanks to Mr. Lysnar, Mr. D. M'Gregor, junr., said it had been suggested that it would not bo necessary to duplicate the efforts' of tho freezing companies. He pointed out, however, .that the companies had failed m the past to effect reform, and did not appear to know what was going on .at tho other end.
•The motion was seconded by Mr Lett, and carried unanimously.
