-. .. NOTES ON THE KACING.' (By Telegraph—Srscial Correspondents Palmerston, April 6. There was not a large attendance at Awapuni to-day, but it improved considerably as the afternoon advanced. As a result of an interview with the Sub-Inspector of Police, stricter supervision was kept over the closing of the totalisator than was the case yesterday. The stewards met after the Hurdle Tace to consider the running of Gold Bird, but adjourned till this evening. Burton and Defeat were the • withdrawals in the Hack Hurdles, leaving, a useful field to go to the post. Eiyn broke away at the start, and made a runaway race ■ of it. He fenced .in a faultless nianner till the last obstacle, the top rail of which he cut out. Puketotarn, Lioiiheart, and Sardonyx- were the most prominent in the early stages, but the fast pace caused them to tire badly in tho concluding stages. 'Golden Water is coming on fast, and should score during the Easter fixtures. Tho running of a couple of tho well-backed division was open to grave doubt. Tho winner's time is a New Zealand record. ' Several horses were strongly supported in' tho Hack Flying, in which Septimus led; at a very fast pace to the turn, where tho Trentham gelding ran wide, and lost his position. Taft then took command, but immediately gave way to Jargon, who in turn went under to Moutoa Girl. The Foxton maro finished very fast, and won comfortably. Moondine was fourth. ■fiermin. and Sea Queen carried tho bulk of the money in the six furlongs open race, but tho latter spoilt her chance by being caught sideways on at the rise of the barrier. Hermia led for a furlong, but was then steadied, and Mon Ami showed the way till well intu the straight. Over the last 100 yards Hermia finished the stronger, and beat tho black maro comfortably. Sen Queen was close up third, and as she gave the leaders fully thirty lengths' start, tho race.should have been hers. Peacemaker was a slightly better favourite than Kauron in the Autumn Handicap. Irish Rifle was cut out at the start, but soon regained his position and led round the top bend. Here Kauroi in attempting a run on the fence also got stopped and sent back. Down the back stretch Peacemaker and Irish Rifle ■ were in the lead. At the straight entrance The Rover, Tcotanc, and John closed up. To Puia swept up on the outelde over tho last half furlong, nnd with n strong run they cut down the field. John, Teotane, and Irish Rifle were all in a line. There were only four runners in the Hr.ck Welter, in which an unfortunate scene took place. The rjunrtet played up a lot at the barrier, Queen of Scots being the worst offender. When the tapes went up Kilosteri went off by himself, Ladronc being next. Contour was badly left and Queen of Scots whipped round and took no part in the race. Kilosteri won all the way and Contour headed I.adrone in; tho "straight and got second money. The barrier for this distances is right opposite the outside stand, and the public
gave vent to their feelings and hooted loudly. This took place for some minutes. After the race tho inside public look up tho hooting. The occupants of the stewards' stand raised a. counter-demonstra-tion. Tho Sire Produce Stakes was a very fast race and the Achilles filly. Peirone won handily at the finish after a hard tussle. Bronze and Apliacn made the pa'ce very warm down tho back. Across tho bottom Aphaea was done with and I'eirene took second place. In the straight she ran up to Bronze and though the latter contested every yard of the way, Peireno had too much pace for her. Counterfeit was third just clear of Masterpiece. Mazurka was last. The Wavprlev-owned Morozc had done a record gallop *on the morning of the first day and on this being known she was made a warm favourite in the concluding event. She won practically at any stage of the race, though she was not allowed to go to the front till the home turn. Gunboat was well clear of Waipunui and Aimwell. Tho time was the fastest of the meeting.
