GOVERNMENT HOUSE DRAINS.
THE LAST WOKD. The Mayor laid before the City Council last evening the following letter, received by him from Sir. H. J. Blow (UnderSecretary for Public Works) :— "I have the honour, by direction of the Minister for Public Works, to inform yon that this Department has received ffotu the City Engineer and Mr. Mestayer, C.E., a joint final certiiicate relating to improvements to the drainage system nfc Government House, which have been carried out in accordance with the recommendations of the gentlemen mentioned, ihe Minister desires to express his appreciation of the able services rendered by your engineer in connection with this work, and proposes to offer Mr. Srorton an honorarium of twenty guineas in consideration of the assistance given by him in carrying out the drainage schema. If you have no objection to offer n cheque for this amount will be forwarded to Mr. Morton in the course of a few days." Councillor Smith said the onlv objection he could see lay in,the smallness of the honorarium. On the motion of the Mayor, it was agreed that the letter be received <r>!i satisfaction, mid that Sfr. j'orton be authorised to receive the honorarium,
