Of the total sum of !'573 ss. 7d., New Zealand has contributed .£302 125., of which ,£237 18s. 3d. was from tho Chinese residents, and ,£l2l 13s. 9d. from tho English friends; and Sydney, Australia, has contributed £2W 13s. Gd., of which .£l9O os. Gd. was from the Chinese, and ,£l4 4s. from the English friends. The expenses in connection with tho fund are:—Cable, exchange, telegraphic exchange, and account fee, per the Union Bank of Australia, .£" 19s. Gd.; cable voucher, receipts, and stamps, per Mr. Hwang, .£5 Is. lid., making tho total expense .£l3 Is. sd. Tho total remitted by wire was ,£450, ami there is a balance" of .£llO 4s. 2d., which is to be remitted to the chairman of the Famine Relief' Committee in Shanghai right away. The Chinese Consul wishes to express at this opportunity his sincere.thanks to tho friends, both English and Chinese, in New Zealand and Sydney, Australia,-for their generous response to his appeal for the relief of the unfortunate ones who have been suffering from the calamity of Hoods. Mr. Hwang has received the following two letters from the chairman of tho Central China Famine Relief Fund Committee, acknowledging the receipt of tho remittances:— 19 Hankow Road, Shanghai, February 9, 191 L Dear sir—l beg to acknowledge the receipt of your telegram stating that voti had sent .£2OO as a contribution to 'the Famine Relief Fund. The money has been duly paid to. Nic by the bank, and I have turned it over to the treasurer of our fund at tho Yokohama Specie Bank. I am glad that you have taken such an interest in this matter, and trust that wo shall have still further contributions from you. The need is truly desperate, as you will see from some of the photographs which I am sending you herewith. Perhaps you will be able to give these photographs to some newspapers in your city, and to ask for still further contributions. With kind regards, and hoping to hear from you still further.
