AUSTRALIAN NOTABILITIES.
A GATHERING IN LONDON. Ey TclccrapU—Press Association-Copyriirht London, April 4. A paper on "Australian Development" has been rear! by Captain Muirhead Collins, private secretary to Sir George Keid, before an influential gathering, among those present being Lord Denman (Govor-nor-Gcneral-elect of Australia), Sir John Fuller (Governor-elect of Victoria), Sir Georgo Itcid (High Commissioner for Australia), General Sir E. Ilutton (one-time commander of tho Australian Forces), Sir Francis Ilopwood (formerly of the Colouia' Office), and Sir Ernest Shacklcton (Ihi' Antarctic explorer). Lord Denman expressed the pleasure he felt at going to Australia. He was conscious of the disadvantages of following experienced predecessors, but relied on the proverbial cordiality of Australians. Sir Edward Hnlton, in moving a vote of thanks lo Captain Collins, said Australia had reason to be proud of her military past. The Hon. W. I!. Dallcy had pioneered the co-operative system of Empire defence. The General "eulogised compulsory service.
