Sonic discussion took place as to the advisabilitv of purchasing 'a horse for tho fire engine, members pointing out that it would bo necessary to engage another permanent man, and that, with the animal's upkeep, would .be too expensive. Subsequently it was resolved to make the best arrangements possible with Messrs. M'Ewan and ' Carter for the hire of a horse until the end of the financial year in June next. Touching on the matter of water pressure, Mr; M'Ewan said that a recent test had shown that there was little to fear if even the largest building in Petono should take fire, as the supply from the settling tank and main reservoir would easily cope with it. Mr. Mothes said that the main reservoir supply, whilst it was satisfactory, could be improved. Both Air. Short and Mr. Southgate also expressed the opinion that the board 'vul nothing to fear regarding water pressure. The ' superintendent, in liis report, pointed out that he had great difficulty in locating fires when notified through the alarm box, this being owing to the informants leaving the box from which they gave tho alarm. When the brigade arrived they had often to hunt'round for themselves. AXEMEN'S CARNIVAL. Nominations in connection with the Upper Hntt Axemen's Carnival, to bo held on Anril 15, will close on Friday, March 31."
