ARBITRATION COURT'S AWARD, WAGES AND PREFERENCE. Tho award of (he Arbitration Court in tlio Wellington saddlers' dispute was filed yesterday. It is based for the most part on the recommendation of tlio Conciliation Council. The points 011 whieh Iho council did not ugicc (wages and preference) were settled by tlio parties after tlio dispute had been referred to the Court. Tlio award, which is to lake effect from April 3, will continue in forco until April 3, 1913. It provides for a 48-hour week, with work until 1 p.m. ou Saturday, or the day of the local halfholiday. Overtime. All work performed beyond the time mentioned above, or on holidays, will bo considered overtime, and will be paid for at the following l'al'es:—For the first four hours, time and a quarter; for tlio mist, two hours, time and a half; afterwards, double time; 011 Sundays, doublo time. Any time lost through a worker's own default, during any week, is to bo made up before overtime rates are paid. Classes of Work. Only threo classes of workers will 1m recognised:—(o) Journeymen,, including journeymen and journey women; (b) apprentices, including those employed as improvers; (c) female stitchers. The Wages Rates, Every journeyman, working at any branch ot the trade, shall bo paid not less than Is. Id. per hour. Any employer may arrange with all or any of his workers to work piece-work at rates set out in the log. Wages must be paid in full once a week. Provision is made for uuder-rato workers. For (ho Apprentice. Apprentices will bo paid not less than tho following wages:—For tlio first year, 7s. Gd. per week; second year, 10s. Gd.; third year, 15s. j fourth year, .£1 2s. Cd,; and fifth year, XI 10s. Three months' probation shall bo allowed the first employer for the purpose of determining fitness of any apprentice. After serving his five years an apprentice may bo employed as an improver for six months at not less than 3,55. per week, and a further six months at not less than '15s. per week. ■ Existing legal arrangements, or relating to apprentices now serving any employer, may continue, provided that any employer wishing them to conlinuo shall forward the names of his present apprentices to tho Inspector of Factories within one mouth of the filing of this award. Femalo Stitchers. Female stitchers shall be paid 7s. Gd. per week for the first year, 12s. Gd. j*t week for the second year, ITs. Gd. ■ per week for tho third year, .£1 ss. per weak for the fourth year, -CI lQs. per week for the first six months of tho fifth year, and 15s. per week for tho final half of the fifth year. Thereafter a minimum rate of lid. per hour is to be paid. Holidays. The recognised holidays in all branched will be Good Friday, Easter Monday, lung's Birthday, Labour Day, Prince of Wales Birthday, Christmas Day, Boxinj Day, New Year's Day, and Anniversary Day. Preference. Employers shall employ members of tho union in preference to non-unionists provided that there are members of the union equally qualified with non-mem-bers to perform (lie particular work, and ready and willing to undertake it, but this shall not compel an employer to dismiss any person now employed by him. No employer shall, in the engagement or dismissal of his 111011, discriminate against members of the union, or do anything in the conduct of his business directly or indirectly, for the purpose of injuring tlio union. When unionists and non-unionists are employed .together there shall bo 110 distinction between them, and both shall receive equal pay for equal work. Definition of a Saddler. A saddler is defined .as any person {engaged in the manufacturing or repairing of saddles, bridles, harness, machine-belt-ing, military accoutrements, horse and cow covers, strapping, leggings, or any class of leather Uiat a saddler is usually employed ou. All bags, portmanteau ana trunk, and collar-makers shall be included in the award. All work shall be done 011 the premises,, and. all sub-contracting shall be done under the conditions of tho award,
