GALA DAY AT'DANNEVIRKE.
■ 0 • HAWKE'S BAY COMBINED SCHOOLS' SPORTS. A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent.) Dannovirke, March 29. About 1500 children from Iho schools over the district from Waipawa to Woodvillo, embracing Waipukurau, Takapnu, prmondville, Dannovirke. and Woodville, besides tho .schools off the line towards the coast, held a groat day in glorious sunshine at Dannevirko to-dav. There wore nearly 5000 spectators, crowds arriving by special trains from north and sotitli. When the children formed squads and mnrehed to tho ground they presented a fino sight. Displays of drill by the boys, Maypole dances, club-swinging, dumb-bells, flags, wands, and other physical exercises by the girls were given. All tho schools were dressed in different colours and formed a very attractive sight on the green grass with fino grounds surrounding. During tho day two bands played. Mr. Stevenson, of Woodville, was in chargo of the proceedings, Mr. J. Cartwright (secretary), and a strong committee assisting.
