A young man named Joseph Thomas Christie and a lad named Robert Irwiii Meaclem were brought before the Supreme Court for sentence this morning on charges of breaking into and stealing from a settler's residence. The Crown Prosecutor said Meaclem was convicted of theft at Burnham School, from which he absconded. Christie in 1908 was whipped at Masterton for stealing. The lastnamed was convicted and ordered to como up for sentenco for theft, and in WO!) was convicted and sent to Burnliam. Ho absconded and was rearrested at Kaiapoi, and once more absconded, and was next convicted of theft and forgery at Napier, and sent to Invcreargill Prison for four years, where his conduct was exemplary, and ho was sent back to Burnham, but he absconded. The Judge said Meaclem would be sent back to Burnham. Christie would ba sqnt to liivercargill Prison for reformative purposes, to bo there detained for t period not exceeding five years.'

Though there-is. an inconsiderable iucreaso.in tho average age'of tho latter, the largo increase of young pupils is proportionate in tlw Timaru schools, aud foreshadows a great increase in the attendance at thess schools in tho near future. Tho large proportion of preparatory pupils makes large el!isses for tho teachers, the majority of whomaro not specially trained for the work. Generally, the work of tho schools is favourably reported on. The treatment of history, is unsatisfactory,. tho historical readers supplied not meeting the require* mcnts of the system. Frco books are disapproved, being objectionable from both tho economic and hygienic points of view. A hawker who sold stinking fish was sentenced to one month's imprisonment by Mr. Bishop, S.M., to-day. DESERTERS TRACKED DOWN. Dai'flavillc, March 28. Two sailors from the Norwegian barquo Dccima mysteriously disappeared about a month ago. They wero traced to another shin at Auckland, and under arrest tho deserters wero brought back to Kainaro last night. As the Deeimn is not failing for Liverpool until to-morrow, tlio men aro kept under arrest. NO ACTION. Christchurch, March 28. On account of a legal difficulty, lio action is to be taken against the narents of tho child who recently escaped from Bottlo Lako Infectious Diseases Hospital for refusing to return the child to the institution.
