—I* * 1 THE TRAMWAY EXTENSION,. A meeting of the Karori Borough Coun« cil was hold last evening, the Mayor, Mr, C. I. Dnsent presiding. There were also present:—Councillors Cathie, Burn, Spiers, Standen, Welling, Hildreth, ana .Waluisloy. ' Letters were received from Messrs. Richardson, Blair, and M'Cabo. explaining the reason for the delay in the shipment (from Sydney) of sleepers, contracted for by the council. The writers' pointed out that they had been put to a heavy loss by the delay, and expressed the hope that no penalty would be onforced as the circumstances surrounding the. delay were beyond their control, The Mayor stated that all the sleepers required were now on the works, and any further shipments winch came to hand would have to bo delivered to the City Council. The work, the Mayor added, had been started again last Thursday,. and was now jogging aloug. He did not think that anything more need be done in regard 'to the letters. The letters'were received,. •Replying to a letter in regard to tho scheme for the 'drainage of the eastern'' side of the Kaiwarra Stream,_ a report from tho city engineer (Mr. W. ll.'Morton) was read, staling that the scheme of . drainage for Northland and AVadestcwn was not yet complete, and, after having evolved a scheme, he proposed reporting to the council. Mr. Morton said that ho would strongly recommend that tho most satisfactory method of dealing both with the water supply nml sewerage would be that such extensions should be part and parcel of the city system, and not, as in tho case of Miramar, handed over to:, tho authorities of the borough in which such works are located. In preparing a scheme consideration would be given to tho possibility of the area referred to having to lie provided for, and information would be conveyed to the council showing how the proposal will affect the city. Mr. A. Sceley wroto ottering a section of road reserve, adjoining sections 7 and 8, Tin-till Street, for sale to the council. The otter was not accepted. The City Council wrote stating that tho work on the unfinished portion '.of tho K;ivori tramway extension would be recommenced immediately. Councillor "Wedde forwarded his resignation as a sinking fund commissioner. Reporting on the tramway construction, the Borough Engineer stated that sleepers had come to hand as follow:—On March 8, 112; on March 1.1, 2(W: wi March 22, 1152. These made a total of 1333, and this number would complete tho tramway to the terminus. Trench work nml plate- ■ laying had been commenced last week. About 1000 ft. of rails had been laid to dale. Owing to the smallncss of tho gangs the work had progressed slowly during the past lour day\ but men wcro being taken on every day, and it was cxpected that all tile rails would'be laid by April 12 if line weather was experienced.
