ATTACKED BY AN EEL.
A SWIMMER SEVERELY BITTEN. Boware of fresh-water eels. There is a common belief that the eel is a harmless denizen of our streams, but a recent incident has rather exploded that theory. The other day, Mr. J. l\ Wallis, of Weiliugton, was bathing in that nice stretch of water nt Ngaturi, where the Tiramca junctions with the Makuri Stream. Ho had been swimming for a few minutes in deep water, when .1 slimy thing passed over one of his less. Ho at once, made for the hank, but had ouly proceeded a few yards when he felt the teeth of tho eel fasten in the flesh behind the left knee. He strugglcd i gamely, and at length succeeded in kicking off tho eel with his right foot, ami reaching the bank. The, shape of the eel's jaw as outlined by tho teeth marks still showed red and inflamed when shown to a reporter on Saturday. The episode is also vouched for by Mr. A, Eglinton, who was in company with Mr, Wallis.
