WANGANUI PORT AND ENTRANCE.

IMPOSING SCHEME FORMULATED. (By Telegraph-Special Correspondent.) Wanganui, March 25. Mr. J. B. Murray (chairman) aud Messrs. W. G. Bassett, T. B. Williams, N. Meuli, aud A. G. Bignell (town members of the Harbour Board) have issued a statement of policy. They intend (subject to expert approval and if re-elected at next month's ejection) to . advocate measures as follow: — (1) The adoption of a scheme for extending the present moles as designed by the engineer (Mr. Howorth). (2) Promotion of a Bill in Parliament authorising a loan of from .£200,000 to .£250,000 and declaring a rating area on a graduated scale of two-thirds for the combined town districts, and one-third for counties that may be included in such area.

(3) Raising of the loan immediately that the Bill passes through Parliament, (4) To order, as early as possible, a seagoing dredge. (5) To dredge out the deep-water basin between Castlecliff and tho soap works. (0) To construct necessary wharves, sheds, etc., at such basin. Also, in addition, to continue the moles at the entrance, and to extend tiud improve the. training walls within the river between Castlecliff and the town and to further dredge tho channel between these two places. The engineer estimates the cost of such a scheme us follows-.—

(1) Extra wharfage at Castleeliff, .C7OCO. (2) Construction of floating basin: (a) Dredging of basin lo a depth of SO feet at low waterj area of 15 acres .tliiOfl. (b) Dredging between basin and bur, .CM.OOO. (t) Walls enclosing basin, .£9150. (3) Extension of the present moles at harbour entrance:

(a) Norlh mole, .-CM.500. (b) .South mole, .ffl.'Sfl, Riving addilional lonqlli of ISOO and 2100 feet re.-poelivi'ly. (I) r.iihvgfincnt of quarry and plant,

• .CSOOO. (5) Combined suction and bucket dredge lifting 100 tons rev hour, .010,000. Contingencies, .£IO,OOO. Total for immediate requirements, .Cir.0.300.

In addition there will bo the cost of further developing the inner harbour estimated at Jjrm.VOO, making a grand tolal of .£IOO,OOO. These proposals cover mosi of the points raised by tho party which has recntly been urging the board lo jo quicker,
