TROUBLE ON S.S. ARAHURA.

THE FOOD IN THE FOEECASTLE. On Saturday morning trouble arose on board the Union Company's steamer Arahura, and culminated in the firemen and greasei* refusing to work for several hours. It is stated that there has been some dissatisfaction in the forecastle in regard to the food. The whole matter was referred to Captain Stringer, As-sistant-Superintendent of Marine, who is given power under Section 10 of tho Shipping and Seamen Act to adjudicate. Mr. W. T. Young, secretary of tho Seamen's Union, represented tho men, and, at the inquiry, staled that they alleged that they had not been supplied with "sufficient food without waste, , ' as specified by the ship's articles. After hearing evidence, Captain Stringer gave his decision in favour of the men, and (he master of tho vessel was notified accordingly. Shortly before noon the men "turned to," and the Arahura got away for Picton, Nelson, and West Coast ports. Some of the specific reasons put forth by the men as having influenced them to take, the action which they did, were that they had not been given milk with porridge, and that such articles as jam, marmalade, and molasses had not been included in their menu. Another grievance was related to the manner in which the food was served. This apparently did not please them.
