SWIMMING CARNIVAL.
IN AID OV Y.W.C.A.'S FUNDS. The platforms round Hie Te An Baths on Saturday were crowded with spectators. There was evidently u strong desire abroad to support Uie .swimming carnival which had been organised in aid of the funds of the Y.W.C.A. hosfel. A really excellent afternoon's entertainment was provided, some of the swinimiiiq events proving most interesting and exciting. Early in the afternoon Mr. It. A. Wright, on behalf of tho Y.W.C.A. movement, expressed thanks for tho lr.ree gathering, and for the assistance of those responsible for its organisation ami management. This was the first time thiswimming authorities hud offered their assistance on an occasion of this kind, and ho honed it would not bo tho last. Ho also thanked the donors of trophies for their generosity. There was nothing very striking in the events. All were well contested, iintl had plenty of competitors. In the 220 yards junior scratch event (open) Faterfon led for 100 yards, closely followed by Capper and Murrell. At 150 yards Murroll had appropriated second place. Silver was then lying fourth, tho rest being bunched a. yard or two further behind. Coming down the noxt turn Capper headed Blundell, but Paterson increased bis lead by about, one yard;, that was (ho position at the finish. In the 50 yards handicap (inter-club), which had to bo swum in four heats, Galloway and Mullins came a head heat for second place. In the swjm-off Jlullins was the victor, his time being 36sec, or 3-s?ec. faster than tho time in which the original race was won. In the 100 yards inter-club event, Bricc went off before his time, and, therefore, took no part in the race. He was, consequently, unable to attempt the New Zealand record, but had a try afterwards. Hβ started badly, and could only do 03 4-5 sec. Champion, at Auckland, has done 61 4-Sjcc, though the record has not been allowed. A word of praise is due to Mr. T. Shields, who was most energetic in securing pribos, and who also was the ■ teacher of most of the "midgets," who created amusement and interest in their little swim. Other officials were Mr. G. S. Hill (supervisor); judges, alessrs. F. Wilton, H. Lee, H. K. Holmes; starter, Mr. E. J. Fleming; timekeepers, Messrs. G. S. Hill, G. Satld, and A. A. Somerville; diving judges, Messrs. H. Lee, G.
