AFFAIR IN CUSTOMHOUSE QUAY.
RATHER WONDERFUL ESCAPE, Shortly before 3 p.m. yesterday an accident, attended by peculiar results, happened at the corner of Brandon Street and Customhouse Quay. A two-horse express, owned by Messrs. Lyons and Co., and driven by Thos. Williams, was proceeding along the Post Office side of the Quay in the direction of the railway station, and, when the driver mrived at the corner mentioned, he noticed another express just turning into Customhouse Quay. As it happened, tramcar No. 71, bound for Wallace Street, was also coming along, and was apparently not seen by the driver of tho first express, for, in trying to allow the other expressman room to pass, his horses, it is faid, swerved on to tnc tram line, and the near side animal was struck by the apron of the car ou tho fore shoulder. The impact knocked' the other animal off its feet.'and both fell to the ground amidst a wreckage of harness and splintered wood from the pole and the front of tho express. When the car struck the horse the driver (Williams) was thrown off his feat, and, in falling, turned a complete somersault before he landed on top of the struggling horses. It is stated by eye-wit-nesses that one of the animals, in its struggles, pushed him in front of the still moving car, and this, in turn, landed him clear of the rails. Williams picked himpelf up little the worse for his thrilling experience, and at once attended to his horses. But it was a wonderful escape.
