"POSSESSOR OF UNTOLD WEALTH." SEARCH DISCLOSES ONE PENNY. Taihape, March 16. A surprise was caused here yesterday when a half-caste woman, who posed as the possessor of untold wealth, was arrested, nfter being identified as Martha Tainni, a habitual criminal, who was released in October last on license. Tho woman had completely dazzled .business men with stories of her alleged wealth. She was driven about by land agents, entertained them and others, and talked of giving large benefactions to public objects in (ho town. When searched bj the -police she only possessed a penny. Charged with false" pretences this morn* ing, she.was'remanded till to-morrow. LIO.UOR IN KING COUNTRY. . To Kuiti, March 16. At tho Magistrate's Court to-day, before Mr. Loughnan, S.M., A. Hyde, Te Awamutu, was charged with supplying George Wilkinson, of. Hangataki, a-half-caste, with liquor. lie pleaded' guilty, but said that lie was unaware Wilkinson was a half-caste. A letter written by him was well ami grammatically written, and signed. Wilkinson said ho did not know he was breaking the law. The magistrate lieid that Wilkinson was more guilty than defendant, but directed that there be no prosecution because tho evidence had been gjven on oath. In fninra he would deal with halfcastes ordering liquor. Brewers should make inquiries respecting orders coming from tho King Country, and ascertain if they came from half-eastes.' The offence, was a serious one, but the first of the kind. Accused was fined «E5, and 21s. costs. Ha trick and Co., Waitara, on two charges of sending liquor into the King Country without advising the Clerk of (he Court of the. quantity and destination, were fined £'n on each charge, costs 7s. A. , Kerr, hotcikcepor, Waitara, for the same offence, was fined £1, and 7s. costs. LITIGATION RE PETROLEUM. Gisbornc, March IG. At the Supreme Court to-day tho ca&B of Wm. Knox Chambers, of Gisborne, sheep-farmer, on behalf of himself anil all other shareholders in the East Coast Petroleum Co., Ltd. v. Wm. Lissant Clayton, of Gisbome, land agent, Geo. Hutchison, of Wanganui, barrister, and tho East Coast Petroleum Company, was taken. Plaintiff asked for a deciaratioa that Clayton holds 50,000 shares in the New Zealand Oilfield Co., and that he be declared trustee for the plaintiff company of tho said sliares. Mr. Morrison, with Mf. J. W. Nolan, appeared for plaintiff, Mr. Lusk for Clayton,-Mr. Hutchison,(appeared in person, and Mr. Blair for the company. Evidence was given by,. plaintiff and Mr. Hutchison, and (he case was adjourned till to-morrow. DEER STALKING. Christchurch, March 16. Advice has been received from the office of the Minister for Internal Affairs, Wellington, that the reel deer-stalking reason in North Olago will commence on April 1, and close on May 20. The license for tho Otago districts is £i, and for tho Waitaki district .S3, and for an additional fee of X'l a stalker may. shcot two more stags in the latter district. The fallow buck season in Olago is from April 1 to May 31, and the license fee' is .£2. AUCKLAND CORONATION MEN. Auckland, March IG. Tho following applications for inclusion in the New Zealand contingent for the Coronation celebrations were received by Colonel Holgatc, and all the applicants have been recommended to headquarters as suitable:—Quarter-master-Sargeant Walter E. Carter (of the 7th Horse), Norman Gray (New Zealand Garrison Artillery), Sergeant Larlcv (Pinkc Mounted Rifles), C. L. Crump (A Battery), R. Sisson (A Battery), and Captain W. C. Sinel (Devonport Cadets). ALTERED. TRAIN SERVJCE. Palmerston N., March 16. Great indignation is expressed generally as to tho proposed alteration m tho train service, between Palmerston and Wairarapa. Particular exception is taken to the cancellation of the 7 a.m. Wairarapa train, which, under tho suggested time-table, will leavo Palmerston North at 4.45 a.m. The 7 a.m. train has proved most convenient, and surprise is expressed at the superseded train starting at, tho early hour stated. HE WAS FINED £30. Wanganui, March 16. In the Supreme Court this morning Thomas Nolan was found guilty of threatening to burn down a house at Bulls, and to shoot the inmates. He was fined .£3O, in default six months' imprisonment, Tho jury had recommended the prisoner to the mercy of the Court. NEWS IN BRIEF. Duncdin, March 16. Welcome rain fell last night, breaking up a three months' drought. Timaru, March IS. H.M.S. Cambrian arrived to-day. Sho will stay here for a few days.
