The departure of-Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Eaino, ■of Karori, for England, was tho occasion for a largely-attended farewell gathering and a presentation on Wednesday evening in (ho Karori Church Schoolroom. In tho speeches made by Messrs. Pennington, Clark, and Moore, felicitous references were made- to the excellent wdrk done by Mr. Raine on the local Borough Council for tho advancement of the district, and to his unselfish and assiduous efforts on behalf of the Wcslcyan Church. .Mrs. Imiiss and Miss M'lxiclilan paid appreciative tributes to the activity displayed by, Mrs. Raine as vice-president of the Ladies' Guild, and to the excellent work rendered in that capacity. Among (lie elocutionary and musical items wore solos by Miss Picrard, a violin and organ duet, by Messrs. Evans and Mann, and roeitations b.v Messrs. P. Y. Clark and K C. Pennington. Tho Rev. J. R. Clark presented Mr. Raine with a handsomely fittcd-Vp travelling bag, and wished them an enjoyablo tonr to and from tho Homo Country. Mr. and Mrs! R-aine leavo by the Ulimaroa this evening to 'connect with tho Grosser Kurfurst at Sydncv, Mr. A. W. Hogg, M.P., Ma.sferlon, has officially notified tho Railway Department of his satisfaction with tho new proposed Wairarapa time-table. Dr. H. I\. Hatherly has been appointed consulting surgeon to the Wanganui Hospital.
