MUNICIPAL SUPERANNUATION.
PRELIMINARY STEPS. ' Some two years ago the Municipal Association sent a notice to- the various local authorities asking; for particulars of tho number of employees, etc., in order that a scheme of superannuation for local authorities might bo cone into, Mos.t_ of the bodies circularised, however, refused Yd go"'on with the matter at tho time, hocauso of the position,of the existing law. Last session Mr. T. M. Wilford, M.P., moved in the Hbuso of Representatives in-the direction of doing -away with" "the joint and several liability, ,, and succeeded in his effort: This enables city councils to make n' general fund without there being a joint and several liability. As the data obtained two years ago may not bo the data of to-day, the Mayor is circularising tho local authoritios throughout New Zealand, asking for particulars as to tho number of employees, percentage on (he wages or contributions the councils would bo prepared to pay, rate of wages, length of service, age, and whether they are married or single, f-o that a proposal can be submitted to an actuary for the drawing up of a scheme of superannuation.
