MASTERTON NOTES.
THE GOLF CLUB. (From Our Special Correspondent.) Mastcrion, March ]5. At tho annual meeting of the Mastcrion Golf Club, which was hold to-day, the report indicated a successful year. Tho income had exceeded the expenditure by .£ll9, ami the bank overdraft had been reduced by that amount. The men's championship had been won by Mr. I , '. ]!. William-s for afternoon lea kindly provided at the oucning and closing of the season, and to Messrs. 11. G. Williams, 11. JL liccthaiii, W. ir. Booth, and 11. Foley for prizes presented during tho year for the men, nml by Mrs. Norman Bc3tham for the ladies. Mr. J. C. Johnston, of Palraerston North, had been engaged as coach for a fortnight from May 8. The links, apart from the greens, were already in playing order. Stock Bridge Asked For, A deputation, consisting of Messrs. James M'Gregqr, A. P. Whatman, and A. J. Percy, waited upon the Masterton County Council yesterday to urge that a stock bridge be erected over the Waipoua Kiver at tho eastern end of the town. The deputation was fortified by a petition signed by forty settlers. It was suggested that the discarded bridge at the northern approach might be utilised for tho purpose. The. engineer, however, expressed the opinion that there bridges were too old to be of any use. Eventually tho engineer was instructed to prepare plans for a structure at a cost of about •EIOOO. When these are ready a couferenco will probably be held with the Borough Council on the subject. Borougn and County Councils. The monthly meeting of the committee of the Masterton Borough Council was held last evening, the Mayor (Mr. J. M. Coradine) occupying the chair. Permission was granted the Very Kcv. Dean M'Kcnna to uso the Dixon Street baths on March 17 for the annual swimming sports iu connection with St. Patrick's School. An imprest vote was made to the returning officer in connection with tho Harbour Board election. Permission was granted the Masterton South Band to hold a sacred concert on April 18. At the, meeting uf the Masterton County Council yesterday the clerk stated that the cost of the forthcoming Harbour Board election, so far as the Wairarapa district was concerned, would be fully .£3OO. One councillor suggested that a resolution on tho subject should bo passed, pointing out that although the cost of the election fell upon the Harbour Board, it was tne settlers who would eventually hare to pay. No action was, however, taken. In connection with the Harbour Hoard elections very strong comment has been made upon the fact that whilst the residents of "boroughs have practically the Parliamentary franchise, those in the counties have only a ratepayers' qualification. The population of the five boroughs concerned in the election does not represent more than 0000, whilst that of tho" counties is fully 11,000. The boroughs, however, will have double the voting power of .the counties in the election of mombers of the Harbour Board, as the Act provides that the respective rolls shall be used for the election. An enthusiastic meeting of the Masterton Kcchabite Tent was held last evening, when delegates from . the Carterton Tent were present. Arrangements were made for a civic welcome to be tendered the English delegates'who visit Masterton on April 10, and a committee was Fcf. up to make the necessary arrangements. Too Many Willows. The willow nuisance has latterly been engaging the attention of the Masterton County Council. . In many cases the flow of the water in streams has been obstructed fcy. the prolific growth of willows,, which were oriiinoliy planted for protective purposes Tho'council decided on Tuesday that the settlers bo Riven notice that they must remove the willows from the bed and side of., the Wnngaehti River.. General Items. The solicitor, to the Masterton County Council is to be asked if tho council has the power to acquire wafer rights ovpr tho Lansdowno dam. Largo quantities of pollard poison continue to be sent out from the Masterton depot of tho Agricultural Department. Autumn poisoning is now in progress. The poisoning of the Native properties on the coast is being carried out under the supervision of Mr. U. M'liae. The stock slaughtered at the Masterton borough abattoir during the past month was as follows:—Cattle, 117; sheep and lambs, 720; calves, 7; pigs, 310. At a special meeting of the Borough Council last evening, a resolution was carried , authorising the taking of-a poll on the proposal to raise a loan of .£3485 for the construction of a street to connect Queen Street with ' Chapel Street. The Masterton County Council, acting upon a circular received from the Jjepartment of Tourists and Commerce, h.as decided to have tho existing finger-posts in the county repainted, and to erect others where they may be required. The dipping season will shortly be at an end. Officers of the Stock Department are already visiting the saleyards. tn see if infected. sheep are exposed for sale. At a meeting of the committee of the Masterton Musical and Elocutionary Competitions Society, held last evening, itwas reported that the amount allocated for prizes.was .£132 12s. Gd. It was decided to substitute an impromptu debate for the bagpipe competition. The programme was finally revised and corrected, ,and will be issued forthwith.
