A Farewell Tea,, Mrs. Lewis, of Kelburne, and. Miss Banks were the hostesses at a very pleasant and entertaining tea given on Saturday afternoon as a farewell for Mrs. B. Cooper, who is returning very shortly to her home in Batu Gojah, in the Malay States.' Very pretty flowers decorated the rooms, the tea-table in the dining-room looking particularly pretty with richlycoloured galardias. A most amusing competition racked the brains, of. the. guests for-a co nsiderable part of the afternoon;., the answer to every question being a magazine. Some of the answers were most ingenious, and the woman who was fond of magazines probably had the best chance of winning. Two of the guests, both, strangely enough, bearing the same name, Miss Hilda Cooper, but .claiming no kinship, were the winners of the prizes. There was also some, very enjoyable music. ' Mrs. Lewis wore a dress of black ninon with transparent yoke and sleeves; Miss Banks was in a pink floral chiffon frock with a cream lace yoke; Mrs. Cooper wore a white embroidered linen frock and a large white hat with shaded roses; Miss Lewis was in a white embroidered muslin, and her friend, Miss Morlin, who helped her with the tea, had on a cream frock trimmed with lace; S.P.H.W. and C. A meeting of the Society for the Protection of the Health of Women and Children was held in their rooms on Friday afternoon. Mrs. W. A. Evans, M.A., occupied the chair. There were present: Mesdames G. Ponsonby, C. Izard, AV. F. AA 7 ard, M'Gavin, Glover, A. A. Corrigan, and Glasson. Leave of absence was granted to Mrs. C. Izard, who is leaving on a' visit to England. Mrs. Holgate's resignation as a member of the committee, owing to the fact that she is leaving New Zealand for. England, was accepted "with regret. An Afternoon Tea. A very enjoyable tea was given by Mrs. Bennie at the end of last week for Miss AVhetstone, ■ who is returning to England very shortly. . The drawing-room and dining-room were prettily arranged v.j'iflowers, tho tea-table in the latter looking...particularly effective with nasturtiums. ■ Music and recitntiohs lielped to mako a very pleasant afternoon. Mrs. ..Bennie wore a shot silk dress, veiled with chiffon, and Miss AVhetstone was in a pretty black and grey ninon frock. Among those present were Mrs. Pope, Miss Clark, Mrs. Darling, Mrs. Hoi ton, Mrs. Lindsay, Miss Belle Luke, Mrs. Baldwin, Miss Meadowcroft, Mrs. Lloyd, and Mrs. Greenfield.
Miss Marion Neave left by the Manuka for Sydney on Friday, where her marriage to Mr.' MacFarlane, a New South AVales station-holder, takes place shortly.
Mr. and Mrs. Elder are staying at Day's Bay House.
Mrs. Mathew Holmes has. returned from a visit to Dunedin. ■ -
Mr. and Mrs. C. Pharazyn-have* taken Mrs. Seddon's house during the latter's absence in' England. -,-,•
'Mrs! S. Noble-Campbell returned to Masterton on Friday from a visit to Napier and Gisborne.
Miss* Parkinson, who lias been spending some time in Masterton, left on Friday with her uncle, Mr. AVrightson, for England, via Sydney.
Mr., and' Mrs. F. Maul, of Ashhurst, and Mr. and 'Mrs. Deiison/. of Buhnythorpe, old residents of Mahawatu, leave on a trip to Europe very, shortly. Mr. and Mrs. H. Kilsby, of Fitzherbcrt East, also long residents of this district, leave on a trip to England next inbnth.
Miss Shaon, who came out from England oh a visit to New Zealand a few mouths ago,' and who has been spending the greater part-of the time with-Miss Richmond, is leaving on her 'retunr to England this week. Miss Erica Fell accompanies her.
Miss Whitaker, who gees back to Eng'laud' very shortly, returned to AVellington from a round of farewell visits to Hawera, L'ltham, and Huntervillo on Saturday. Slio' is to bo farewolled at the Girls' Friendly Society's Lodge on Thursday evening, and. is leaving the AVellington diocese at the end of the week.
Miss Barbara Putnam left for Westport last week, and is busy training children for the dancing in connection with the huge bazaar which is to be held in the Town Hall at Easter time.
The death occurred yesterday at Hastings' of Mrs. H. C'oulson, relict "of the late Captain J. I'. CouUon, who lost his life somo years ago in a Wreck near Mcl•bourne. The deceased lady, who removed recently from AVellington to Hastings, suffered from an illness which has extended over many months, and which she endured with a cheerful courage throughout. She was greatly respected for her many good qualities, and a very wide circle of relatives and friends will mourn the loss of her ready sympathy and kindly companionship. . She leaves a daughter and two-sons, the elder being Mr. Max C'oulson, dentist, of Hokitika.

■A New Jersey man finds tho job of rag-sortc. at a paper-mill a most remunerative position. His wages are only 21s. a week, but in one week he has cleared .£3OO from variables which he found concealed among the old rags and waste which daily pass under his rake. A few days ago .he picked up an old stocking which contained two diamonds worth ,£IOO each, and on another day ho ■como upon a Inrge sapphire and a ruby tied up in a handkerchief.
