SWIMMING.
SWIFTS LADIES' CARNIVAL.
Saturday was hardly an inspirating kind of day upon which 'to hold swimming sports, and to many of the onlookers it seemed far and away the better part to be merely a spectator. However that was doubtless a matter of taste and those taking part in the various events seemed to bo entirely oblivious to the discomforts of wet garments, and chilly winds. Considering the uninviting day and all the many counter attractions an attendance of three hundred spectators at tho first annual carnival of the ladies' branch of the Switts Amateur Swimming Club was highly satisfactory. The Mayor, Mr. T. M. Wilford, and 'Mrs. Wilford were present, and Mrs. Wilford presented the medals to the winners of the Hundred Yards Club Championship, Miss A. O'Leary and Miss Ilina Murrell. In the 50yds. Senior Handicap Miss A. O'Leary (Masterton), starting from three seconds behind scratch, won her race in 3G 3-ssec., which seems to ho her usual performance, judging by previous records. The officials for the carnival were::— Referee, Mr. T. Wilton; judges, Messrs. W. Skegg and A. H. H. Stevenson; starter, Mr. .E. ./.'Fleming; check starter, Mr. 11, A. Lamb; time-keepers, Messrs. W. H. Pollock and J. S. Martin; press steward, Mr. W. F. Watt; call stewards, Mrs. Peat, Misses D. Hill, and G. Flux; handicappers, Messrs. F. Wilton and AV. I. Watt; joint lion, secretaries, Miss S. Murrell and Mr. E. S. Forne. The carnival was quite one of the brightest seen here for years past, the different events being got off in rapid succession, and good competitions frequently took place. As has been stated Miss Annie O'Learv, of Masterton, had an easy win in the 100 yds. Club Championship, but the fight for second, honours was close and exciting, Miss Hina Murrell eventually winning by less, than; a foot from last year's champion. Miss Olive Arthur. Only three of the seventeen entrants for the Schoolgirls' Championship succeeded in scoring points. Miss Mabel M'Cabe, of Te Aro School, came out on foil with four firsts (10 points), Miss Kola Bentlcv, Girls' College, being second with three 'seconds and one third (7 points), and Miss Ellen M'Namara, Dixon Street, being third with one second and three thirds (5 points). An interesting exhibition of the Royal Life-saving Society's methods was given by a troupe of Kelburne Boy Scouts under Scoutmaster Lawson and Instructor P. A. Wilton. Two of the boys, Scouts Rutherford and Gray, showed themselves hii.'hly proficient in the water drill.
