N.S.W. VITAL STATISTICS.
. The following, preliminary .figures regarding the vital statistics of .New South AYales .fpr the last, year are supplied bi-lbo,-Government-Statistician:—
:The number of births, was .15,533 (males 23,113,. females 22,090), the largest number, eycr registered in any year, and 1800 more than in 1900.. Tile rate is 27.32 per thousand of population, the highest' since 15)01, when it was 27.60. The deaths numbered 10,101 • (males 0319, females G812). The. rate is 10.-14 per thousand' of population, which is; higher than in either of the preceding years, which were both years of low mortality. It is. 7 per cent higher'than.in I'JOO, and is largely due to. epidemics of whoopingcough and diphtheria. The number of deaths from cancer-was 1170, erjun.l to .71 .per thousand of population, and. from phthisis .1057, equal to .63 per thousand of population. The cancer rate is slightly lower than in 1000, but' is higher than-in any other year. The phthisiS-irate, on the contrary, is the lowest r.oji -record; with the exception of ; 1907. . - '
/The marriages ,were 14,204, the largest number' oii "record," arid" 12iG more than in 11)01). The rate is 8.58 per thousand of population, which is, with the exception of . 1832 and 1883, when it was 8.7 and 8.8 respectively, the highest since 1805. '
