About twenty! members attended. Mrs. M. H. Lnngford (neo Craig), being about to retire from the teaching profession, wrote, resigning her membership and position of vice-president.. A motion of thanks to tho writer fori her services to the institute, and congratulations on her marriage was adopted with applause. Tho secretary of the N.Z.E.I. wrotoj with reference to the promotion scheme campaign, indicating what was proposed to bo done in the matter through tlio press and the householders' meetings. Reports en. tho Hokitika conference were given by some of tlio delegates. A paper by Mr. Kirby, of the Coonoor School, on "Tho Geography Outfit," was read by tho secretary. Tho write? was accorded a vote of thanks. Tho president said that in one recent instance two teachers at tho Pctono, West School had been called upon to pay for a relieving teacher when absent for examination. ■ This was an innovation, and appeared unfair-, as other, 1 teachers cither were 'not required to. have substitutes, or tlio substitutes' were Training College substitutes, who were not required to be paid. The Man-aging Committeo had considered the matter, and recommended tho branch to ask the Education Board to rescind the resolution under which tho, payment had been taken. The money'

was deducted from their chccpies, and they had had no previous notice. The Managing Committee pointed out that the tendency of the board's action would be to discourage teachers from seeking to improve their academic status. A motion, as recommended by tho Managing Committee, was moved by the president-, seconded by Mr. Burns, strongly supported by several speakers, and carried unanimously. Tho following new members were elected:—Misses E. Jensen (Mauriceville West) and H. It. Mason (Shannon), and Messrs. P. A. Murphy (Mas-tert-on), and A. H. Tocker (Pencarrow). Tho next meeting will be hold on April 7, when a paper on manual training will be read.
