MASTERTON NOTES.
— 4 (From Our Special Correspondent.) Mastorton, March 2. A benefit concert is being organised in this town to assist Miss Thclma Petersen, a young lady who possesses a voice of considerable promise, to pursue lier studies at Adelaide. A strong committee has tho' concert in band. A huge bullock, turning tho scale at 14001b5., was slaughtered at the Mastorton Abattoirs this morning on account of a local butcher. It was tho largest beast that had been slaughtered at tho abattoirs since their construction. Tho following is tho pass list of the theoretical examinations held' last December at tho District High School: Preparatory division—Leslie Mason, 100; Nellie Kendall, 100; Ethela Sykcs, 99; Doris Mason, 100. Lower division (junior)—EfDo Sarah Bannister, 87, honours. Mr. A. S. Malcolm, M.P., is to deliver an address in tho Town Hall on March 27 on "Imperial Unity." The local branch of tho Navy League is taking an interest in the lecture, which promises to bo well attended. A crop of oats, yielding 83 bushels to the acre, has just been threshed out on tho farm of Mr. AV. J. AVelch, of tho Upper Plain. This magnificent result is said to have been obtained by tho use of liitro-bacterinc. In the Magistrate's Court this morning a cabman named .Thomas Pinkney was fined for allowing his cab to remain unattended in tho street. There was a passenger in the cab when it was left by tho driver, and the horses bolted. The Justices described tho practice as dangerous. Two owners of i motor-cars were fined for breaches of tho borough by-laws.
The manager of the Wellington Farmers' Meat Company has received a cable message from London intimating that the first consignment of frozen meat had reached tho Homo market and had been graded high, being in perfect condition on arrival. ■ Tlio second match for the Booth Cup, between Jlasterton and Groytown, was played yesterday and resulted in a win for Jlasterton by thirty points. Tlio Jlasterton Club has now to play off with Carterton to dccido who shall hold tho cup for tho ensuing year. In addjtion to the time-tablo alterations already announced, it is stated that tho early morning train from Jlasterton for tho north is to be restored. This concession will bo appreciated by a large number of travellers. Tho local branch of tho Y.M.C.A. is making its gymnasium exceedingly popular by throwing it open, to businessmen as well as other sections of tho community.
