THE BAPTIST WORLD CONCRESS.
. THE PRESIDENCY" OF THE ; . .ALLIANCE. - • Tlio Rev. J. H. Shakespeare is receiving applications already, from ministers and delegates going. to tho Baptist World Congress in. Philadelphia next June. His hint-that churches should give their pastors a long holiday and a chc'quo. to enable them to attend the congress is- also - bearing —fruit. Several churches have held special meetings, at which they ■ have voted liandsoino amounts to their ministers; and given them extended holidays. ; - Most of the meetings of the congress will be held in the Teniple, tho great church built by Dr. Russell Conwell. It is one of tho finest auditoriums in tho States, and . will scat more' than 3000, persons comfortably. Its- acoustic properties aro -perfect, and' a .whisper on the platform can bo heard all over the building." ■' ' l '"' " ■ Among those taking part iii'tho. congress will be tho great Negro leader, Dr. Booker Washington, who recently declared that; ever sinco.ho was able to' think for himself, ho' had been a Baptist. -In this-respect also ho -will bo 'representative. 1 of his race, as. the Negroes in the Southern States aro' largely connected -with 'the • Baptist: churches. ;> ' ' l '' ; Ono of the duties of the congress 'will; bo to Vlect th'o second prcsidon.tr of tho' Baptist World Alliance, jto succeed. Dr. Clifford. It is understood that lie will be an American. Already tho-American Baptist 'newspapers .• aro ; publishing nominations ftii the office.' -Tho Southern Baptists seem determined to fix their choice: on'- Dr.' Mulli.ns, tlip""pr6siderit of tho largest fiaptist theological college in'the.-world, sit Louisville, Kentucky. : Ho is ono bfithoVablest ; allround men tho Baptists' in, the . States have produced, .eminent as,a./scholar, a thinker, a preacher, and an organiser, and no better clioico could: bo made. Some of • the Northern Baptists are advocating .the claims of Dr.- Stuart tlnir, tho pastor of-tho Calvary-Church, New York; .who: for .forty ;years or ,moro has been ..onc .of tho recognised .leaders among ' tnojßaptists-of tho Jf the American . Baptists'- !': out standing .^non'^ty^;li£o/ ; whose pfe-eminenco 110 one can : for a moment, call in question, theyhavo a' great: number' of ministers eminent' in : one or other department; of public life, and of about equal claims to 'honour; Possibly in this embarrassment tho con-, fcress will; select some .American Baptist layman asDr. Clifford's successor. .The, ' only objection'to this propcsal is \that there aro so many distinguished - laymen that the difficulty of chqio3".Would be almost as great. Mr. Hughes, the late Governor of New York State, and. now a - Justice '■! of:: thq % ' United States : Supremo Court, 1 .would , pro r bably . 'not. accept ' nomination, though it is hoped ho':will tako'part in . the congress." Tho ' choice would perhaps 'fall on; the Hon. • E: W.* Stephens,, of Missouri; of ;!w"hom -his friends' say that ho Hins never-vet: belonged to' Miv socictv of which sooner or later: ha: was not aupomted tho : president. —"Christian World."
