' 1 A notorious Sicilian''brigand named Ballo visited the opera houso with tho mistress of a rival. Ho informed tlio'carabinieri on duty that ho was Ballo. An attempt to arrest him was made, arid ho was eventually overpowered, not, however, befdro ho had killed ono of tho soldiers with a revolver. Ballo is accused of committing ten murders. . It is also alleged that he has been guilty of blackmailing in tlio provinco to tho extent of 150,000 liro (about £6000)' a year. . '
