Owing to tho exceptionally dry season tho water in tho river was lower to-day than at any timo sine©- tho inception of tho River Trust. When tho river steamer service was established a zero mark was fixed at Pipiriki as denoting-tho lowest depth at which it-was reasonable to expect a steamer to reach l'ipiriki. To-day tho water is 42 inches below that zero taark, yet owing tn improvements mado in tho river, stonmers are going to Taumarunui, a total of 144 miles. WATER SUPPLY LOW. Nelson, February 16. Heavy smoke' surrounds the city liko fog. There aro only two days' rescrvo supply at the waterworks. Rivers in tho country aro nearly dry. A chango appears impending, but it is difficult to tell clouds from smoke. FREEZING WORKS CLOSING. Oamaru, February 16. Owing to tho scarcity of fat stock in tho district, duo to the drought, tho freezing works arc closing down on Tuesday next for. the remainder of tho season. NO RAIN YET. New Plymouth, February 16.' Tho bush fires have subsided, but there has been no rain yet.
