Bush fires aro burning brightly over thousands of acres of land between Toko and Whangainoiuoiin,. and aro doing splendid work at time?. However, when tho wind springs up, tho fires rago and homesteads are in danger. This was' tho case last Sunday, when tho blaze- swept round Whangamomona and the town was only saved from destruction •by ■ the valiant efforts of a town bucket brigade, which drew its water supply from a creek, all tho welb having eono dry. At Mangero several railway surfacemen's camps' were destroyed, and tho men had to knock off work. At present tho fires nro quiescent, and |tho wholo country is enveloped in * a thick smoky haze.
