Mr. West was an officer just "made," utationed at flio Southward headquarters, when lie won the medal at the calamitous firo which broki out in Queen" Victoria Street, City. On tho afternoon of June 9, 1902, u fierce and rdpidly-spreading fire broke' out in tho lower part of the lofty warehouse of tho General Elcctric Company, and tho girls ■working above found their escape by the ordinary means cut off, whilo the first ejeipte mhlch arrived were, too short to reiich them. With the aid of membors of tho London Salvage Corps, Mr. West, with coils of wire lashed round him, was lowered from the roof of the lofty building to tho floor, where some of tho girls were, and succeeded in savins two of them. Ho then became unconscious, and was dragged out bv the wire coiled Tound him.
