Saturday, March s.—Handicap Races for • Ist, 2nd, and 3rd-class yachts. Easter Monday.—P.N.Y. Club Picnic. The Mahina, Ethel, and Swan left for the sounds on Saturday last, but owing to the heavy southerly swell had.to put back to- Seatoun for the , night. The Mahina and Swan got away on Sunday morning, and 'the Ethel on .Tuesday morning. It came as a disappointment to most yachtsmen when they learned that the ocean race was postponed last week, but according to the weather report received from the Pencarrow lighthouse-keeper the committee had no option but to postpone the race. . The P.N.Y.C.-ladies' Tace takes place this afternoon, twice round number two course, and, providing the weather is anything like, the race should bo well worth watching. Each yacht is to be sailed the whole way by a lady. The wind was very fresh from the south on Sunday last, necessitating close reefing of. all boats. The Muritai and Nancy Stair and Siren were at Seatoun; and the Rona, White Heather, and Kotiri at Kau Bay. Several of the launches were also in Kau Bay! •-. ""■' ■ Messrsi Johnson and Walker's launch Veronica, in company with Mr. Greenshield's launch, leave for a fortnight's cruise in the Sounds on Saturday week. 1 RacingV[ri'^Australia.:.', |r t ;', ; . : Anniversary,' Eegatk-Sydney's-' great anndaV B Msalfc MmY u ktf a^ m . arre : „¥ the rain, wh'ca''pßuW l almost incessantly throughout the .Never before in the 74 years' history of-the regatta was quite -such: a day: known. Alter an unusual spell of : wet weather, the previous day, had been fine,;. and/hopes, were entertained that there would be blue sty and sunshine for the much-lookea-forward-to" event; but rain commenced during the' night, and dawn indicated correctly enough that x the day would be a "spoil-sport,"' and it was with a vengeance.- The breeze in the morning.was li»ht from east to south-east; it increased and blew .hard from the same quarter in the evening. The,flagship was the magnificent P." and 0. liner Mantua, which was moored off Crembrne; but so far as public patronage was' concerned ' she might havo been a ferry-boat, and a small one at that. The programme included no fewer than 17 races, and all the classes were provided for,-from yacht to- sixfooter. Capsizes were, numerons, and no wonder! In one race—a 14footer eventonly oneboat finished, and she had her mast broken. Rawhiti won the All Yachts' Race from Culwulla 111. somewhat easily. The cruiser yacht event was secured by Diadem, with Apache second. Lina annexed first honours in the cruiser boat race; Dawn'll. was second.- The successful boats in the 18ft. events'were respectively Nimrod and Eunice; whilst Federal did Merry. Widow out of thehonj.'ours in.'the'race for all boats. The j crews of the competing boats had a rough time. ' ...

After an interval of indifferent sailing, Sunbeam found her old form, says the Sydney "Referee," in the Prince Alfred's annual contest for the Marshall Plate, which-mu^t,be won four times by a yachtsman in his own yacht: Starting off the 15min. mark Mr.' Crane's boat gradually closed; in : .on.-her immediate rivals, 1 Fleet-.ving (19min.) and . Aqma (20min.), and going to; the front on the rnn to Fort Denisori eventually won by the.narrow margin. of Msec, from ■Fleetwing. The latter steadily gained on the limit boat Aoma, but sho was"i unable to pass her until after rounding Shark Island. • The race, however, was a close one all through between the three yachts mentioned, all three' finishing within a space of 37sec., with Youlba (13min.); close up fourth. Then; came Rawhiti, Petrel,. Culwalla 111, and Magic. The last-named was some five minutes late in starting. The race b&twpen the- two back-markers Eawhiti (scr.) and ' Culwulla 111 (2min.) was interesting until just before the Watson's Bay Pile-light was abeam, when Eawhiti forged ahead of. her chief rival. From this out the green .boat drew away from Chlwulla 111, and crossed the finishing line: lmin. Usee, ahead of her. • ; '

A fourteen-footer race sailed on Saturday last resulted in a win for Lotus with Kaitare second and. Valetta third.' Redwing.Nan, and Winifred also started. All the competitors were reefed down at ,(he start, but the-wind eased up before tho race finished and allowed of reefs being shaken out. ,- ,

It is rumoured that' Mr. J. M'Lean's yacht Waifangi has been sold to a taitai resident for JE2OO.
