ROWING.

WELLINGTON REGATTA PROSPECTS. ~ " ~ . (By<. Mrrcoht.); . February 18.—Wellington Regatta.' February 25.— N.Z. Championship Regatta, March B\—Napier Regatta. —. '.:.',.li.iiirt •■: Next Saturday will be an important day in'-the aquatic,, world.,}. Tho. is tho local association's regatta, tho most representative gathering of, the kind in New Zealand, always, of course, excepting the New Zealand-Championship'fixture. Tho success of last year's meeting will be well remembered, but it promises to bo eclipsed in interest .by next week's affair. This is chiefly so because of the entry for tho Senior Fours of the famous Wanganui Union crow, the present holders of the four-oared championship of Australasia. It will be remembered now this combination, consisting of Cotterill, .ltylands, Dustin, and; Corby after-win-ning tho New.Zealand championship in January 1810, after a strenuous "go" with the Blenheim crew, were sent '■ to Hobari to represent tho Dominion in this event, the biggest four-oared race ever held in Australasia,', also how tho Blenheim people raised a subscription and sent their representatives as well and finally how the two New Zealand crews fought out a terrific struggle on tho Tamar and left the select of Australia far astern, the Wanganui men beating their southern com-patriots-by a narrow margin. The rowing of the Union crow was admittedly a revelation to the Australians and it is this rowing, arid if report sneaks true, with improvements due to a long course of coaching from sculler William Webb,' that we will see in action ,on tho harbour next Saturday. Opposed to the champions will .be the Pictop four, so far undefeated this season, maybe their old foes, from Blenheim and tho'representatives of the Canterbury clubs. Entries do not close until to-night, so it is impossible to say in full "what clubs nro sending crews. The Wanganui papers report that a full representation is to be made by both tho clubs there, which means that, in addition to the champion four, the Dominion's champion double-sculling duo, Anderson . and Marshall, of tho Wanganui Rowing Club, will also bb competing; also that Stone, tho champion sculler, has been down from Auckland for some timo getting accustomed to the championship course on the river, and that it is not unlikely that he will enter, as a test of his form, for tho championship meeting on' tho following Saturday. According to tho "Weekly Press" the Christchurch clubs are making a full entry, as is also tho Picton Rowing Club, so it is apparent that tho cream of tho Dominion's rowing will bo on exhibition. The fact that the big New Zealand meeting follows at Wanganui on the following Saturday gives an added "fillip to. the interest in the day's work. Practically the same crews will bo engaged and the results will servo as an excellent guide to the allocation of the new championship honours. ' .- ■ .*__ _ The Junior Double Sculls of the S.B.C. were won during the week by. F. G. Craig and F. Newbold who defeated K. Akers and A. Hall in tho final heat by two lengths. The club now has its senior and junior pair-oared events in hand;-but interest in these is'being subordinated • to, regatta work in view of the big fixtures of the next two weeks.

The Nelson Regatta. The. Pictou representatives continued in their winning vein at the Nelson Regatta, their score at the finish standing at three firsts and two seconds, with a cash equivalent of £30. Their captures comprised the senior and both . junior fours. The maiden' fours fell to Blenheim, '■ and tho youths' to Nelson—this latter being ; a general surprise to the rowing community and a bad shock to Picton, whose crew, consisting of tho stroke of the senior combination and threo members of tho juniors, was supposed to be exceptionally "hot."Arnst Active. A paragraph of interest regarding the doings of the champion sculler Arnst appears in tho "boxiug" column. Of his work in connection with next month's big handicap in Sydney, tho "Daily Telegraph" says:—Arnst has now taken to training actively for tho I'arramatta Hundred, which is to bo rowed in March. On the receipt of his new boat, the world's champion commenced work in a somewhat easy-going manner, bat now that he has worn oft' some' of the outside weight ho is doing more strenuous work. And he will need it, too, if ho is to get to his best condition before tho i-aco comes off. Just now' ho is scaling something like 15st., and it will tako a good deal of.hard graft to get rid of the superfluous stono and a half. lie and Fogwcll go out every afternoon now and put in some hot spurts on tho Pnrramatta River. They aro doing long, steady rows just at present, with an occasional spurt thrown in. On top of that they house their boats at Gladesville and then walk to Sydney, Each sculler is determined to get to his very best form if possible for

tho Hundred, and they are leaving r.o stono unturned to do so. They are both coming along nicely, and both are confident that they will not be wanting much in the way of form by the end of March. Whelch and Fogwell. • s During the week the editor of the "Akaroa Mail" received a deposit of .£25 from W. Fogwell binding a match with George Whelch for .£2OO aside and the championship of New Zealand, to be rowed at Akaroa on Easter Monday. . '
