AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
T,I3E NEW ZEALAND COUNCIL.
A meeting of tho council of the Now Zealand Amateur Alhlotic Association was held last evening, Mr. F. Marriott presiding. There ,wore also present: Messrs. Chaffey, Davies, J. H. Pollock, Ross, C. 13.' Bridge, W. Larkin, M. Oram, and W. G. Talbot (secretary). The following umateur reinstatements wero granted :—Alex. , Hawthorn (Auckland), Michael ■ Crane (Southland). Michael J. Ford (Otautau), and Fred King (Timaru). . It was decided to wriie to tho Otago Centre, which forwarded an application for' tho reinstatement of A. It. Buchan, pointing out that the applicant had previously been a member of on amateur club, and under the rules was not eligible for reinstatement until ho had stood down for two years.
In. regard to the application of T. M. M'Goeham, of Taeroa, it was decided that tho applicant should be reinstated as from March next. Notico having l>;en given to reconsider tho reinstatement of L. S. Corby, of Wanganui, this matter was considered. -After, some discussion, the motion to reconsider the matter boeauso of a technicality was lost,.tho result being that tho reinstatement granted recently stands.
The application ,of C. Stratford,' Huntervillc, for reinstatement, was declined. Tho New Zealand Athletic.and Cycling Union wrote stating that it was pointed out at .tho annual conferenco that the attention of the Athletic Association bo drawn to defaulting runners, who woro now competing amongst tho ranks of Amateurs. It was. decided to reply that if any cases could be mentioned, the council would lake action.
It was Mated that Messrs. Xrarriott. Bridge, Pollock. CHalTcv, and Oram, and the secretary (Mr, Talbot) lynuld represent the council afc , the ICew-• Zealand Championship meeting on Jlarch i. It was dccided to ask- Mr. Holt, ofDunodin, to act.as judge of walking at tho championship meeting. . ' Tho sub-committeo appointed to report on the mode of timing' nrantour events : (Messrs. Pollock and Larkin), recommended:—(l) That sports clubs bo requested to carefully select as time-keepers men experienced in timing athletic sprint meetings. (2) That tho timopicces used be by experts experienced in tho construction of chronometers within 21 hours prior' to sports, and certificate handed to tho referee prior to sports, nntl be tested within 72 hours after race, and a further certificate issued. (3) That time-keepers for events run on a straight course take up their position immediately at right angles to starter,-and in a direct fine with the finish, and ,be careful to set watches going with tho flash (not the report) of the starter's nistol. (4) That the starter hold his gun directly overhead, so that tho time-keepers may have a clear opportunity of noting tho first, flash. (5) That clubs publish prominently on their programmes, for the' guidance of timekeepers, Section H of the N.Z.A.A.A. racing laws. (G) That official watchtesters' be appointed by each centre.
