"With such ail array of voting papers to deal with the number of informal votes will inevitably bo large. There is just a possibility that tho election of a representative to tho Hospital Board will not be held. A Sports Club has been formed at FitzheTbert East, with tha following officers: —Patron. Sir. D. Buick.M.P.; president, Mr. S. E. Lancaster: committee, Messrs. L. It. Bryant, A. G. Stewart, \Y. I. Lovelock, \V. Gawith, It. E. Scott, and 1 G. Shaw; joint secretaries,.-Messrs. T. F. Helling and W. Stewart. The first sports gathering is to be held next month. During the month of January the rainfall in Palmerston amounted to 1.55 inches. Eain fell on. eight days. " The Borough Council meets to-morrow night, and it is expected the engineer will be instructed to immediately proceed with the clearing of the area which will ba included in the new dam,, authority for which was given br the ratenayers at tha Tioll held last weeki as it.is desirable that full advantage should bo taken of, the fine weather to set the timber and Vegetation burnt.- It is expected that when the new dam is completed, ths water will be backed up for about twenty chains. Tho trustees of the Methodist Church' havo accepted the tender of Messrs. Sollitt Bros, for the erection of a new church in Broad Street. The building will be in brick, and will provide seating accommodation for nearly, five hundred peoDle. The tower will be ninety feet hicrh, and the roof is to be covered with aslioetns sMes. The amount, of the accented tender was 4:2650.

The promotion of Sub-Inspector Donovan, of the Polios Department, to be an inspector is very g»atifying to his friends here, thoueh they of course re-cr-?fc thnt it will lpe.in'his departure from rur midst. Vr. O'Ponovan is recognised here as a most zealous and painstaking officer, v.-h) lias done much to beep tho lnvn free from undesirables, and has otherwise carried out his arduous duties in a'most thorough manner.

The committer of tho CongregationalCl.nrch Young Men's Fellowship Association has arranged a very complete programme for its mrtlv meetings, and should be a most ufeful organisation.

The scholars of All Saints' Sunday School hehl their annual picnic at the Ashhurst Domain on Saturday afternoon, and spent a most enjoyable time, the usual games and sports baing indulged in.

Weasels ikivc done a considerable amount of damage in Pnlmerston poultry yards of late, one breeder losing a. hundred head of young birds.

The annuril picnic in connection with St. I'atrick'? Roman Catholic School is t' be held at tho Paekakariki beach shortly. ■ '

Judging by a little incident just transpired, the Government is surely becoming economical. Some three months ago the secretary of a certain High School Board, not a thousand miles from Palmerston, notified the Department that it was' necessary to nominate a representative on tho board, as tho term for which the sitting representative, had been appiinted had about expired. Nothing was heard of the matter, and a few days since the representative in question, who happens to be chairman cf the board, also wrote to inquire what had been done in the matter. On Saturday he received a telegram that he had been reappointed, and—nineper.ee to pay! And this after three years' service in the Government interest.
