DOMINION'S MINERAL WEALTH. Auckland, February 6. * At the conclusion of the Mining Engineers' Conference at To Aroha, Captain Richards, manager of the Mount Morgan mine, expressed the belief that twentyyears hence New Zealand would show remarkable strides in the development of mineral wealth. He mentioned iron, copper, and petroleum deposits; and urged that it was the duty of the Government to turn its attention to these / sources of wealth, to extend the geological survey of the country, and to 'pay attention to metallurgy. If New Zealand prosecuted the developmnet of her mineral wealth and observed what was doing at Mount Morgan and Mount Lyell, the results would be a revelation. It was his candid opinion that New Zealand was going fib be a copper-producing country. 4 FOUND DEAD IN BED. Auckland, February 6. John J. Russell, proprietor of the Star . Hotel, Otahuhu, was lound dead in bed on Sunday morning. Death is supposed to have been due to heart failure. CANTERBURY RUNS. Timaru, February 5. Messrs. Craigie and Buxton, M.P.'s, mel the Hon. J. A. Millar at the train yesterday, and urged that the. Land Board's decision that applicants for Canterbury runs must possess cash equal to seven years' rental, of any run applied for was exorbitant and unnecessary. They suggested that four years'rental would be quit© enough. The Minister promised that consideration would be given to the suggestion. - • '

Th< hall has been fitted with seating accom modation for 2000. THE SEALING INDUSTRY. Dunedin, February 6. The Hon. J. A. Millar, Minister for Marine, stated this evening that tenders had been Teceived by the Government from Great Britain for the lease of the Campbell, Auckland, Antipodes, and Bounty Islands for sealing purposes. These islands were advertised for lease a year ago, but the tenders were unsatisfactory, and protection was maintained for another 12 months. Since then very: satisfactory tenders had been received from Great Britain, and another was o* the way out. These would be dealt with on his return to Wellington. COMMITTED FOR TRIAL. Lysnar gave an address on the frozen meat industry and the conditions pertaining in England. . Resolutions were passed similar to those at the recent Christchurch meeting.' STRANDED. Westport, February 4. The tug Mana did not effect connection with the stranded scow Zingara at Karamea. The scow will probably be launched into the Karamea River.
