ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
SERIOUS GELIGNITE EXPLOSION. , 1 A serious accident befell a labourer named Christopher Sevmour, 31 years of ige, ; during a rabbiting expedition to Dhariu Valley yesterday. It appears that 80 37 n J 9 ur Y" as us 'ng gelignite in a burrow ind the charge taking an extraordinarily long time to explode he went over to examine it. Just when ho reached the nolo the ,charge exploded and as a result Seymour had a hand and arm badly shattered. His face and head were also injured. He was brought into the Hospital and it is feared that ho may lose lone of his hands.
, A SLIGHT CONCUSSION. 'A' steward employed on board tho steamer Rakaia, F. Andrews, slipped on the vessel's deck yesterday morning and falling on the back of his head, sustained a plight concussion of the brain. He was removed to tho Hospital for treatment. ; A FALL IN THE STREET. "Whilst hurrying on Saturday morning so as to. cross tho street before a tramcar camo along an elderly maii named Geo. Howard Walters, a carpenter, fell and fractured his ankle and dislocated Jiis hip. His injuries were attended to at tho Hospital. . I UHE WESTPORT COACH ACCIDENT, ■ LADY SERIOUSLY INJURED, (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) ■ _ Wcstport, February 4. It turns out that Mrs. Howarth (wife •of. Mr; Howarth, of tho Customs Dop&rtoisnt) Christchurch) was isoriously injured in yesterday's coach accident. Her .hip bone was cracked or broken and the pelvic bone probably fractured' and she had possibly suffered internal injuries. Mr. Howarth had .his ribs injured. Mr. and Mrs. Howarth were on their honeymoon' tour. SURF-BATHER IN DANGER. Dunedin, February 5. The "danger of venturing too far out while was exemplified in a striking manner at Ocean Beach yesterday afternoon. Waller Tyson, about 35 years'of age, was apparently engaged in "shooting" breakers, when ho was overcome by a strong backwash. Tho lifeline was some little distance away, and when it was procured it was found to .bo tringled, involving loss of time. Fortunately a young man. named Crofton Umbers was close by. and lie rushed into tho "water and rescued Tyson. Tho latter was unconscious when brought ' ashore, and remained so for a considerable time, but ho is now progressing favourably.
