LABOUR'S CONSCIENCE.

AN. ARCHBISHOP'S VIEWS.. (By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent! Auckland, January 31. His Grace the Archbishop of" Melbourne, Dr. Lowther Clarke,'who is.nowspending a short holiday in the Dominion, gave a few of his impressions of the country to a- "Star" reporter this -morning. '"This is by no nieans my first visit to the Dominion," said Dr. Clarke. "I have been here three or four times, but hitherto climate considerations have led me south for my holidays, and that is why I have not previously visited' Auckland. Tα'.my mind the scenery of thia country is vastly more, interesting than that of Australia. What impresses me most is the greenness visible everywhere—a pleasant change from the dry and burnt-up country so common on the other side. The generally prosperous condition of the community is readily apparent to the visitor. Youc advanced legislation undoubtedly is for the'benefit, of the working man; I recognise that in principle the organisation of .unions is rishfc and beneficial, and should ba : extended.. to include .workers of all classes;'''Thefe' : "seeins,'iiowever, both here and elsewhere to L-β a tendency on. the part of the worker to cast aside the obligations, which aro imposed by the privileges he «njorsV Tho law insists that lie should be paid liberal wages, and he on his part does not always endeavour to give honest value for what he receives. It is here that the. voice of the Church should be heard making ,it plain that such selhshness eventually brings its reward."

The Archbishop considered that the spread of free thought among large numbers of workers had a highly detrimental effect, and was in some measure responsible for the unsatisfactory state of affairs ho had alluded to. With regard to tho liquor problem the Archbishop said that he had not studiedtbe question very deeply while in the Dominion. New Zealand's advanced legislation in regard to liquor was interestino; to him as being experimental, but ho hod not had time to inquire into the effectiveness of the local option law, 8 and was therefore unable to express an opinion regarding it. Tho Archbishop, who left this morning by the.express for Eotorua, is expected to return to Auckland on Saturday. ,
