SWIMMING.

SWIFTS CLUB CARNIVAL. M. E. CHAMPION'S RECORD ' EQUALLED. \ In beautiful weather and water, jusi suited for swimming, the Swifts Club held a very successful carnival on Saturday afternoon. Iho Te Aro Baths presented a gay appearance, there being a good attendance of the public, a feature being the number of ladies present. During the afternoon the Tramways Band played, and afternoon tea was provided by a number of lady friends of the club. The arrangements of the committee and the hard-working secretary (Mr. E. S. Forne) were favourably, commented upon by swimmers, and the present accommodation is much better than that formerly in use. The most notable happening of the day was the 500 yards llyfng sqnadrDa race, in which C. Brice, • a promising young representative of the Thorndoa Club, cut out his 100 yards in tho excellent time of Glsec., thus equalling , the New Zealand championship record put up by M. E. Champion, of Auckland. Brice, who uses tho "crawl" stroke, is said to have a great chance of winning the 100 yards event at the New Zealand Championship meeting, which is to bo held shortly. Other good performances in tha flying squadron race were put by Stranger, 65 l-ssec.. Freyberg, G4 l-ssec., and It. Healy and T. Roberts, 65 l-ssec. When this event -was timed to start, Stranger, the ■ prominent Wellington re-' presentative, did not put- in an appearance. ' The club, however, postponed th&. race for five minutes, thus giving his club time to find the missing competitar. After the race the Hon. J. A. Millar., presented gold medals to members of the'' winning team. Tha winner of the natatorial high jump, L. Bridge, devotes a good deal of his spare time to this form of sport, and is picked to win the eventat tho forthcoming championship meet- ; ing. The diving competition wasnotable; for the manner in which it was won by! W. Hicks, tho 13-year-old representative! of the Wellington Club. This competitorwas heard of a few -weeks- ago through' being placed third in the Thorndon Club's tournament. Taken all round, the standard of the swimming has much im-, proved, and everything went well from.' start to finish. Results:- 1 - '
