NOTES AND COMMENTS.
[By Glencoe.]
The Takapuna Jockey Club's meeting will be continued to-day. Oil "Wednesday and Thursday next the Pahiatua Eacing Club's annual meeting takes place. A. Whittaker, J. Conquest and B. Deslcy each rode two winners at Takapuna on Saturday. Considering that the Dunedin Cup is worth 500 sovs., the nominations received for this year's contest are very poor. Still if tho acceptors include Los Angeles, Effort, Iranui, Waiju, Prim, Martine, and Cronstadt, the material for a good race would bo there.. '
The victory of Soultoria in the Takajiuna Cup was quite expected here, but good money was also forthcoming for "Uranium. The winner started favourite on the course and has evidently improved with the racing which she has done lately. Formerly she could not begin qnickly, but now tho Soult mare can go off with the best of them. B. Deeley, who rode her, is in great form at present.
F. Porter left Palmerston North for Gisborne on Friday, taking with him Te Arai, Eauparahn, Kilsyth, and Birkline.
C. Cress will ride Ultimatum in tho hurdlo races at Pahiatua. After an absence of 18 months from the track, Espartero (Torpedo—Espaniola) has rejoined J. Munn's team. . Southland Jockey J. Olsen rode the three fiist winners at the Takapuna Jockey Glub's meeting last week. To-morrow Mr. G. Morse will declare his adjustments for the Hawera meeting. . Allurement liasleft.the Highden. stables, and gone info her new owner's boxes at Palmerston North. It should not be long before the Soult mare is able to win a hack race as sho is looking very well now. Tho lnyeys of odds received a great "turn-up" when Condamino won the 2-year-old event at-North Shore on Saturday. The Soult—Catherine Gordon filly was very 'backward when racing at Ellerslie at Christmas, time, and heivform there caused her to go' out at a long price ou Saturday. She was well placed throughout, and just lasted long enough to score. Delegate. is a somewhat unfortunate horse and seems to be continually filling second place. He generally' runs better on the second day of a meeting as he is a very poor jumper, and a public schooling effects a marked improvement in him. lie occupied his accustomed place at Takapuna on.Saturday, but it would be no surprise to see him. reverse positions with Dan Qucx to-day for the reason stated above. According to present arrangements J. 11. Prosser will send Playmate and Lady Medallist to Hawera next week. Both horses race in the I'orirua trainer's own colours.
The Wellington Racing Club made a substantial profit over its last meeting. The New South Wales trainers, the •M'Graths, and the Flemington trainer, E. 11. Frew, who were recently in New Zealand, returned home very favourably impressed with the totalisator, which enables clubs to givo such large stakes. Air. W. H. Lcvein, "the father of the New South Wales Parliament," has also returned from the Dominion, and consequently we may anticipate the movement tor .the introduction of the machine to bo renewed once more. While contesting tho Wellington Eacing Club's Handicap, Maori King got put on to the fence, and one of his stifles was cut. This was the cause of his nonacceptauce for the Summer Handicap on Wednesday last. The black son of Merriwee is to go to Sydney on Friday nest, and will bo accompanied by Bridge. J. Lowe is. shortly to receive two additions to his team. These are from his Gisborne patron, Mr, F. Hall. ' W. Young leaves to-morrow for Gisborne, where he has several engagements at the meeting there on Thursday and Friday next. s Bpbrikofl has again joined F. Davis's team at Greenmeadows, and the black champion has the appearanco of being perfectly sound. Davis is schooling Culliuan over hurdles—a business which tho big gelding ought to be well suited for. When Luperin was sold at the last National meeting for .£l5O most people were of opinion that his Auckland buyer had had much the worst of the deal. Since then ho has been in I°. MacManemin's stables at Ellerslie, and has been doing tho small meetings in the Auckland district, but with little success. Early this.month his owner tired of him, and sold him for .£25.
Tho little chcstnut horse Toanga' has baon sold by T. Wilson, and will in ftituro 1)0 trained by G. Delaney at llutt. In connection with tho Pahiatua Racing Club's meeting special train arrangements have been made ; A special train will lcavo Palmerston North on both race days' connecting at Woodville with tho Dannevirko train, reaching Pahiatua at 11 a.m. Bookmakers; are notified that they will not bo admitted to the club's course on race days.
