FIRES.
OUTBREAK IN THE CITY. Yesterday the fire brigade had a busy timo from early . morning onwards. Tho first call was'received at 4:27 a.m., from Tory Street, a' fire having broken out at No.' 4 Charlotte Avenue, a fourroomed houso, owned ,by Mrs. Monaghan, of Karori, and occupied by Mr., James A. Fowler. Before tho flames were- suppressed, the building and" contents were badly damaged. The fire is believed to bave originated in tho kitchen, but the cause is unknown. Tbo contents were insured for £75 in tho Australian Alliance Office.
.At about 11 a.m. the brigade . was nailed on to suppress a fire'in a washhouso attached to ; a seven-roomed dwelling at 100 Hanson Street, Newtown. The (lames wero got under-.be-, foro any serious damages resulted. '.Tho building is owned by Mr. Wm. Andor,son and occupied by - Mr.' "Clarenco' Harris. There wero no insurances. •
A third call . was received by the brigade at 9:55 p.m., the outbreak this •.timo.-hcfng in a brick building in Victoria Street, known as Howden's Buildings. Tlio. outbreak was ,on the ton floor, which is occupied by, Mr.' Hugh Douglas, manufacturing stationer. It apparently had originated among somo paper cuttings, and if was suppressed without difficulty. Some slight damnrre resulted to a telephone box, a side wall, and to the roof. "The other floors of tho buildine:. occupied bv John Gruar-and Co., M'Donald and Co., and Joseph W. Read, wero moro or less damneed bv water. Insurances on the building and contents wero not ascertainable.. last evening. , '
