Science and Pleasure. , ' Miss Allraan Jlarchant, M.A., Principal of the Otago Girls' High School, JJunedin, returned yesterday by the Moeraki from a most, interesting and enjoyable visit to Sydney. Merchant atteiided tho various meetings that were held. It was a very iaree gathering that assembled in the Sydney University, viomtes of the' Australian .Association and delegates from various scientific societies being present . from all the Australian States as well as from New Zealand. Tho work of the congress was most pleasantly" combined with entertainmentpapers and the-reading of addresses being dealt with in.tho morning and in tho afternoon excursions to various' interest-. \m places, garden parties., or receptions takin? place- In the evening there wore_ lectures by the professors.' and discussions. An excursion that Miss Marchant found particularly interesting wns that made to the Jesuit College at Lane Cove, where the most. wonderful instruments for the recording of earthquakes are kept. ,i „''..' Among the many Social functions Riven for the, entertainment of the visitors was a. garden narty by- his Excellency Lord Chelmsford, another'one By the-.-Women's College, a oonverf-azionc by the Eoyal ■Society and University professors, and , various other., functions,' f=o that people from the' States and; the Dominion:' had of for ',ih.e_V;first time or of renewing previous acquaint- j anceship. .It' seems."somewhat' far ahead to be already making arrangements for the Science Congress to be held in 19H, but that year isto be a most memorable one in the history of the Australian Association, for it is anticipated that the members' of the British Association will attend the gathering. Tbo Sydney Universitv has been very fortunate in having h.id large sums of money left to it at different limes, and although the University people say they arc poor, and that there are many thine-* they wish to do, to further the welfare of the University,,-it f-eoms a wonderfullycquinped- place to those who belon? to ■smaller and younger - institutions. The rendine-room is exceedingly large, ■ probahlv the largest iii nny of the cities, while the Mitchell Library, a recent-be-quest, is a. marvellous place. The hooks nre stored on glass floors,'so that the ltaht filters through from above and lyclow. They.are placed on adjustable alu- , minium racks, and electric lifts carry them from floor. to floor as tliev are wanted. Needless to saw Hie book-lovtv and tbn searcher after knowledge seldom learo tho library with their wants un- ■ satisfied. . ■ . ■ The wealth and enterprise of Sydney can be realised when it is known that six million pounds have been spent on buildinjs alone during the ywr.
